創世記
前12〜前2世紀に成立したヘブライ語聖書の創世記を、11章299節、日本語と英語の対訳で置く。 まず第1章から第11章まで、いわゆる原初史を置く。天地の創造、エデンの園、カインとアベル、ノアの洪水、諸民族の表、バベルの塔。第12章のアブラムからは族長物語に入る。 訳はナラティビスト編集部による。既存の現代語訳・英訳は引き写していない。 内容の確認には 欽定訳（1611年）と JPS（1917年）の英訳（いずれも公有）を参照した。
これはナラティビスト編集部による聖書の日本語訳・英語訳であり、いかなる教会・教派・聖書協会の訳でもない。特定の教派の立場を代表せず、礼拝や教理の典拠として用いるためのものではない。神名 YHWH は慣行に従い「主」（英語では the LORD）と訳した。
天地の創造と六日の業
The Creation in Six Days
1はじめに神は天と地を創造した。
2地は混沌として何もなく、闇が深淵の面をおおい、神の霊が水の面の上を吹きめぐっていた。
3神が「光あれ」と言うと、光があった。
4神は光を見て、良しとした。神は光と闇とを分けた。
5神は光を昼と呼び、闇を夜と呼んだ。夕となり、朝となった。第一の日である。
6神は言った。「水の中に大空があり、水と水とを分けよ。」
7神は大空を造り、大空の下の水と大空の上の水とを分けた。そのようになった。
8神は大空を天と呼んだ。夕となり、朝となった。第二の日である。
9神は言った。「天の下の水は一つの所に集まり、乾いた所が現れよ。」そのようになった。
10神は乾いた所を地と呼び、集まった水を海と呼んだ。神はそれを見て、良しとした。
11神は言った。「地は草を生やせ。種を持つ草と、種を持つ実をその種類にしたがって地の上につける果樹とを。」そのようになった。
12地は草を生やした。種を持つ草をその種類にしたがい、種のある実をつける木をその種類にしたがって。神はそれを見て、良しとした。
13夕となり、朝となった。第三の日である。
14神は言った。「天の大空に光る物があり、昼と夜とを分けよ。それらは徴となり、季節と日と年とを示すものとなれ。
15それらは天の大空にあって光を放ち、地を照らせ。」そのようになった。
16神は二つの大きな光る物を造った。大きい方の光る物に昼をつかさどらせ、小さい方の光る物に夜をつかさどらせた。また星々を造った。
17神はそれらを天の大空に置き、地を照らさせ、
18昼と夜とをつかさどらせ、光と闇とを分けさせた。神はそれを見て、良しとした。
19夕となり、朝となった。第四の日である。
20神は言った。「水は生き物の群れで満ち、鳥は地の上、天の大空の面を飛べ。」
21神は大きな海の獣と、水に群がって動くあらゆる生き物をその種類にしたがい、翼のあるあらゆる鳥をその種類にしたがって創造した。神はそれを見て、良しとした。
22神はそれらを祝福して言った。「産めよ、増えよ、海の水を満たせ。鳥は地に増えよ。」

1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2The earth was formless and empty, darkness lay over the deep, and the spirit of God moved back and forth above the waters.

12The land brought out growing things: plants that make seed, each of its kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in it, each of its kind. And God saw that it was good.
13There was evening and there was morning: a third day.
14God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs for seasons, for days and for years,
15and let them shine in the dome of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so.
16God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night, and he made the stars as well.
17God set them in the dome of the sky to give light on the earth,
18to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
19There was evening and there was morning: a fourth day.
20God said, "Let the water swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly above the land, across the face of the dome of the sky."
21So God created the great sea creatures and every living thing that moves and swarms in the water, each of its kind, and every winged bird of its kind. And God saw that it was good.
22God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase, fill the water of the seas, and let the birds increase on the land."
23There was evening and there was morning: a fifth day.
24God said, "Let the land bring out living creatures of every kind: livestock, crawling things, and wild animals of every kind." And it was so.
25God made the wild animals of every kind, the livestock of every kind, and everything that crawls on the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good.
26God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness, and let them rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and everything that crawls on the earth."
27So God created humankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
28God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase, fill the earth and take charge of it, and rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every living thing that moves on the earth."
29God said, "Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit carries seed. They will be your food.
30And to every wild animal, every bird of the sky, and everything that crawls on the earth and has the breath of life in it, I give all green plants for food." And it was so.
31God saw everything he had made, and it was very good. There was evening and there was morning: the sixth day.
1:1 は独立した文（「はじめに神は天と地を創造した」）と読む見方と、後続する節への従属節（「神が天と地を創造しはじめたとき」）と読む見方が並び立ち、2節・3節との構文関係の理解が分かれる。1:2 の רוח אלהים は「神の霊」「神の風」「激しい風」のいずれにも訳しうるが、ここでは「神の霊」を採った。1:26 の「我々」は天上の会議、尊厳の複数、自らへの問いかけなど、複数の説明が提示されている。
エデンの園と人の造成
The Garden of Eden and the Making of the Human
1こうして天と地と、そのすべての万象が完成した。
2神は第七の日に自分の仕事を終え、第七の日に自分のしたすべての仕事を離れて休んだ。
3神は第七の日を祝福し、これを聖なるものとした。神がその日に、創造し造ったすべての仕事を離れて休んだからである。
4これが天と地の由来である。それらが創造されたとき、主なる神が地と天を造った日に、
5野の低木はまだ地になく、野の草はまだ生えていなかった。主なる神が地に雨を降らせず、土を耕す人もいなかったからである。

4This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. On the day the LORD God made earth and heaven,
5no bush of the field was yet on the earth and no plant of the field had yet come up, for the LORD God had sent no rain on the earth and there was no human to work the ground,
6but water came up out of the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
7Then the LORD God shaped the human from the dust of the ground and blew the breath of life into his nostrils, and the human became a living being.
8The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the human he had shaped.
9Out of the ground the LORD God made grow every tree that is pleasing to look at and good for food, and in the middle of the garden the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10A river went out from Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided and became four branches.
11The name of the first is Pishon; it winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12The gold of that land is good; bdellium resin and onyx stone are there as well.
13The name of the second river is Gihon; it winds through the whole land of Cush.
14The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it runs east of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15The LORD God took the human and settled him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it.
16The LORD God commanded the human, "You may eat freely from every tree of the garden,
17but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you must not eat, for on the day you eat from it you will surely die."
18The LORD God said, "It is not good for the human to be alone. I will make him a helper suited to him."
19So out of the ground the LORD God shaped every animal of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the human to see what he would call them; whatever the human called each living creature, that was its name.
20The human gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field, but for the human no helper suited to him was found.
21So the LORD God made a deep sleep fall on the human, and while he slept he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place.
22The LORD God built the rib he had taken from the human into a woman, and he brought her to the human.
23The human said, "This one at last is bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh. She will be called woman, for she was taken out of man."
24That is why a man leaves his father and his mother and holds fast to his wife, and they become one flesh.
25The two of them, the human and his wife, were naked, and they felt no shame.
2:4 の前半と後半のあいだに資料の継ぎ目を見る見方が広く行われ、1:1–2:4a を祭司資料、2:4b 以下を別系統とする区分が通例だが、章全体を一続きの構成として読む立場もある。2:6 の אד は「霧」「地下から湧く水」など訳が分かれる。アダム（人）と אדמה（土）の語の重なりは原文にあるが、訳では再現していない。
蛇の誘いと園からの追放
The Snake and the Expulsion from the Garden
1蛇は主なる神が造った野のどの獣よりも狡猾であった。蛇は女に言った。「神は本当に、園のどの木からも食べてはならないと言ったのか。」
2女は蛇に言った。「私たちは園の木の実を食べてよい。
3しかし園の中央にある木の実については、神は『それから食べてはならない。触れてもならない。死ぬといけないから』と言った。」
4蛇は女に言った。「あなたがたは決して死なない。
5それを食べる日に、あなたがたの目が開け、神のように善悪を知る者となることを神は知っているのだ。」

1Now the snake was more cunning than any animal of the field that the LORD God had made. It said to the woman, "Did God really say you must not eat from any tree in the garden?"
2The woman said to the snake, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden,
3but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden God said, 'You must not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.'"
4The snake said to the woman, "You will certainly not die.
5God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will open and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil."
6The woman saw that the tree was good for food, a delight to the eyes, and desirable for gaining insight. She took some of its fruit and ate, and she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate.
7Then the eyes of both of them opened, and they knew that they were naked. They stitched fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the breezy time of the day, and the man and his wife hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9The LORD God called to the man and said to him, "Where are you?"
10He said, "I heard your sound in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid."
11God said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree I commanded you not to eat from?"
12The man said, "The woman you put here with me gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate."
13The LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The snake tricked me, and I ate."
14The LORD God said to the snake, "Because you have done this, you are cursed among all livestock and every animal of the field. You will move on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life.
15I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel."
16To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pain in childbearing; in pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you."
17To the man he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree I commanded you not to eat from, the ground is cursed on your account. In hardship you will eat from it all the days of your life.
18It will grow thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
19With the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, since you were taken from it. You are dust, and to dust you will return."
20The man named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all who live.
21The LORD God made garments of skin for the man and his wife and clothed them.
22The LORD God said, "Look, the human has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now he must not reach out his hand and take from the tree of life as well, and eat, and live forever."
23So the LORD God sent him out of the garden of Eden to work the ground he had been taken from.
24He drove the human out, and east of the garden of Eden he stationed the cherubim and the flame of a whirling sword to guard the way to the tree of life.
3:15 は蛇の子孫と人類とのあいだの反復的な争いを述べたものと読むのが本文に即した理解とされる一方、後代のキリスト教的解釈は特定の個人を見る。3:16 の תשוקה は「慕う」「求める」「向かう」など訳が分かれ、続く支配の句との関係も議論されている。本章に「罪」「堕落」という語は現れない。
カインとアベル、レメクの歌
Cain and Abel, and the Song of Lamech
1アダムは妻エバを知った。彼女は身ごもってカインを産み、言った。「私は主によって男子を得た。」

4and Abel too brought some of the firstborn of his flock, with their fat portions. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
5but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. Cain became very angry, and his face fell.
6The LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?
7If you do well, will you not be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must master it."
8Cain spoke to his brother Abel; and when they were out in the field, Cain rose against his brother Abel and killed him.
9The LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"
10The LORD said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground.
11Now you are cursed from the ground, which opened its mouth to take your brother's blood from your hand.
12When you work the ground, it will no longer give you its yield. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
13Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can carry.
14Today you are driving me off the face of the ground; I will be hidden from your presence and will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and anyone who finds me will kill me."
15The LORD said to him, "Then whoever kills Cain will be avenged sevenfold." And the LORD set a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would strike him down.
16Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was building a city, and he named the city after his son Enoch.
18To Enoch was born Irad; Irad fathered Mehujael; Mehujael fathered Methushael; Methushael fathered Lamech.
19Lamech took two wives; the name of one was Adah, the name of the other Zillah.
20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the ancestor of those who live in tents and keep livestock.
21His brother's name was Jubal; he was the ancestor of all who play the lyre and the pipe.
22Zillah also gave birth, to Tubal-cain, who forged every kind of tool of bronze and iron. Tubal-cain's sister was Naamah.
23Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to what I say. I have killed a man for wounding me, a boy for striking me.
24If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold."
25Adam knew his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, for she said, "God has set another offspring in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."
26To Seth also a son was born, and he named him Enosh. It was then that people began to call on the name of the LORD.
4:7 は文法・語彙ともに難解で、「罪は戸口に伏す」の主語、代名詞の指示対象、性の不一致をめぐって諸説がある。4:8 のマソラ本文はカインの発話内容を欠き、サマリア五書・七十人訳・シリア語訳などは「野へ行こう」に当たる句を持つ。4:15 の「しるし」が何であったかは本文に記されていない。
アダムからノアまでの系図

1これはアダムの系図の書である。神が人を創造した日、神は人を自分に似せて造り、
2男と女に創造した。神は彼らを祝福し、創造された日に彼らを人と名づけた。
3アダムは130年生きて、自分に似た自分の姿の子をもうけ、その名をセトと呼んだ。

32Noah was 500 years old, and he fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

The Sons of God and the Command to Build the Ark
1人が地の面に増え始め、彼らに娘たちが生まれたとき、

1When people began to multiply on the face of the ground and daughters were born to them,
2the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took as wives any they chose.
3The LORD said, "My spirit will not remain in man forever, for he is flesh. His days shall be 120 years."
4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men of old, men of renown.
5The LORD saw that human wickedness was great on the earth, and that every thought their hearts formed was only evil, all day long.
6The LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him in his heart.
7The LORD said, "I will wipe from the face of the ground the man I created, and with him the animals, the creeping things, and the birds of the sky, for I regret that I made them."
8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
9This is the line of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time; Noah walked with God.
10Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11The earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
12God looked at the earth, and there it was, corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted its way on the earth.
13God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before me, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am going to destroy them along with the earth.
14Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and coat it with pitch inside and out.
15This is how you shall make it: the ark is to be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.
16Make an opening for light in the ark, finishing it a cubit from the top. Put the door of the ark in its side, and make it with a lower deck, a second deck, and a third.
17As for me, I am bringing the waters of the flood over the earth, to destroy from under the sky all flesh that has the breath of life in it. Everything on the earth will die.
18But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall enter the ark, you and your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you.
19From every living thing, from all flesh, bring two of each into the ark to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.
20Of the birds by their kinds, of the animals by their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground by its kind, two of each will come to you to be kept alive.
21And you, take for yourself every kind of food that is eaten and store it up; it will be food for you and for them."
22Noah did so. He did everything just as God commanded him.

The Flood Covers the Earth
1主はノアに言った。「あなたと家族はみな箱舟に入れ。この時代にあって、わたしの前に正しい者はあなただと見たからである。
2清い獣はすべて7つずつ、雄とその雌を取れ。清くない獣は2つずつ、雄とその雌を取れ。
3空の鳥も7つずつ、雄と雌を取れ。全地の面にその子孫を生き延びさせるためである。

1The LORD said to Noah, "Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation.
2Take with you seven of every clean animal, the male and its mate, and two of the animals that are not clean, the male and its mate,
3and seven of the birds of the sky as well, male and female, to keep their kind alive over all the earth.
4For in seven days I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the ground every living thing I have made."
5Noah did everything the LORD commanded him.
6Noah was 600 years old when the waters of the flood came over the earth.
7Noah went into the ark with his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives, because of the waters of the flood.
8Of the clean animals and of the animals that are not clean, of the birds and of everything that creeps on the ground,
9they came to Noah two by two into the ark, male and female, as God had commanded Noah.
10And after the seven days the waters of the flood came over the earth.
11In the 600th year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the springs of the great deep burst open and the windows of the sky were opened.
12Rain fell on the earth for forty days and forty nights.
13On that very day Noah went into the ark, and with him Shem, Ham, and Japheth, Noah's sons, and Noah's wife and the three wives of his sons,
14and with them every wild animal by its kind, all the livestock by their kinds, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth by its kind, and every bird by its kind, every winged creature.
15They came to Noah into the ark, two by two, of all flesh that has the breath of life in it.
16Those that came were male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him. And the LORD shut him in.
17The flood was on the earth for forty days. The waters rose and lifted the ark, and it was raised high above the earth.
18The waters swelled and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark drifted on the surface of the waters.
19The waters swelled higher and higher over the earth, and all the high mountains under the whole sky were covered.
20The waters rose fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered.
21All flesh that moved on the earth died: the birds, the livestock, the wild animals, all the swarming creatures that swarm on the earth, and every human being.
22Everything on dry land that had the breath of the spirit of life in its nostrils died.
23He wiped out every living thing that was on the face of the ground, from human beings to animals to creeping things to the birds of the sky. They were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.
24The waters held their strength over the earth for 150 days.

The Waters Recede and Noah Leaves the Ark

1God remembered Noah, and all the wild animals and livestock that were with him in the ark. God made a wind pass over the earth, and the waters began to go down.
2The springs of the deep and the windows of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky was held back.
3The waters receded from the earth little by little, and at the end of 150 days they had gone down.
4In the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.
5The waters kept receding until the tenth month. On the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains appeared.
6At the end of forty days Noah opened the window of the ark he had made
7and sent out a raven. It went back and forth until the waters had dried up from the earth.
8Then he sent out a dove, to see whether the waters had gone down from the surface of the ground.
9But the dove found no place to rest its foot, and it came back to him in the ark, because water still covered the whole earth. He put out his hand, took it, and brought it in to himself in the ark.
10He waited another seven days and again sent the dove out from the ark.
11The dove came back to him toward evening, and there in its beak was a freshly picked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the waters had gone down from the earth.
12He waited another seven days and sent out the dove, and it did not come back to him again.
13In Noah's 601st year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the waters had dried up from the earth. Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and the surface of the ground was dry.
14By the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was completely dry.
15Then God said to Noah,
16"Come out of the ark, you and your wife, your sons and your sons' wives with you.
17Bring out with you every living thing that is with you, the birds, the animals, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, so that they may spread over the earth and be fruitful and multiply on it."
18So Noah came out, and his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives with him.
19Every animal, every creeping thing, every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out of the ark by their families.
20Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and taking some of every clean animal and every clean bird, he offered burnt offerings on the altar.
21The LORD smelled the soothing aroma and said in his heart, "I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intent of the human heart is evil from youth. I will never again strike down every living thing, as I have done.
22As long as the earth lasts, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will not cease."

虹の契約とノアの息子たち
The Covenant of the Bow and Noah's Sons
1神はノアと息子たちを祝福して言った。「産めよ、増えよ、地に満ちよ。
2地のすべての獣、空のすべての鳥、地を這うすべてのもの、海のすべての魚は、あなたがたを恐れ、おののく。それらはあなたがたの手にゆだねられた。

1God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.
2The fear and dread of you will be on every animal of the earth, on every bird of the sky, on everything that creeps on the ground, and on all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hand.
3Every moving thing that lives will be food for you. As I gave you the green plants, I now give you all of it.
4But you must not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood, still in it.
5And for your own lifeblood I will demand a reckoning. I will demand it from every animal, and I will demand it from man; from each man, for the life of his brother, I will demand a reckoning.
6Whoever sheds human blood, by a human shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.
7As for you, be fruitful and multiply; spread over the earth and increase on it."
8God said to Noah and to his sons with him,
9"As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and with your descendants after you,
10and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every wild animal of the earth with you, all that came out of the ark, every animal of the earth.
11I establish my covenant with you: never again will all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again will a flood come to destroy the earth."
12And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all generations to come.
13I set my bow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
14Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds,
15I will remember my covenant between me and you and every living creature of all flesh, and never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all flesh.
16When the bow is in the clouds, I will look at it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth."
17God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth."
18The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan.
19These three were the sons of Noah, and from them the whole earth was peopled.
20Noah became a man of the soil and planted a vineyard.
21He drank some of the wine, became drunk, and lay uncovered inside his tent.
22Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness and told his two brothers outside.
23Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it across both their shoulders, and walking backward they covered their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father's nakedness.
24When Noah woke from his wine and learned what his youngest son had done to him,
25he said, "Cursed be Canaan. He will be the lowest of slaves to his brothers."
26He also said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem, and let Canaan be a slave to them.
27May God make room for Japheth; may he dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be a slave to them."
28After the flood Noah lived 350 years.
29All the days of Noah were 950 years, and he died.
9:20–27では、罪を犯したのがハムであるのに呪われるのはその子カナンであり、この不一致は本文の重層性によるとも、カナン人の従属を説明する物語上の意図によるとも論じられ、9:24の「末の息子」が誰を指すかにも異論がある。9:22の「父の裸を見た」がどこまでの行為を指すかについても、字義どおりと読む立場と、レビ記18章の語法から性的な含意を読む立場がある。近世以降の奴隷制擁護論はこの箇所を「ハムの呪い」として用いたが、本文にハムを呪う言葉はなく、この読みは現在の研究では支持されていない（人名：ノア、セム、ハム、ヤフェト、カナン）。

11From that land he went out to Asshur and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah,
12and Resen, between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.
13Mizraim fathered the Ludim, the Anamim, the Lehabim, the Naphtuhim,
14the Pathrusim, the Casluhim (from whom the Philistines came), and the Caphtorim.
15Canaan fathered Sidon his firstborn, and Heth,
16and the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites,
17the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites,
18the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the clans of the Canaanites spread out.
19The border of the Canaanites ran from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.
20These are the sons of Ham, by their clans and their languages, in their lands and their nations.
21Sons were also born to Shem, the father of all the sons of Eber and the older brother of Japheth.
22The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram.
23The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.
24Arpachshad fathered Shelah, and Shelah fathered Eber.
25Two sons were born to Eber. The name of one was Peleg, because in his days the earth was divided; his brother's name was Joktan.
26Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,
27Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
28Obal, Abimael, Sheba,
29Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.
30Their settlements ran from Mesha toward Sephar, the hill country of the east.
31These are the sons of Shem, by their clans and their languages, in their lands and their nations.
32These are the clans of Noah's sons, by their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.
10章は民族名・都市名・地域名を人名の系図の形に並べており、著者の知る世界の地理を映すという点では見方が一致するが、反映される時代の推定（前2千年紀後半とする説から捕囚期以降とする説まで）は分かれる。10:11は主語をアシュル（人名）と取って「その地からアシュルが出て」と読むこともでき、ニムロドの続きと取って「彼はアシュルへ出て行き」と読むこともでき、古代の訳でも扱いが割れている。10:21の「ヤフェトの兄」も、セムが兄とする読みとヤフェトが兄とする読みが可能である（人名：ノア、セム、ハム、ヤフェト、ニムロド、クシュ、ミツライム、プト、カナン、エベル、ペレグ、ヨクタン、アルパクシャド、アラムほか）。

1全地は一つの言語、同じ言葉を用いていた。
2人々が東から移動して来て、シンアルの地に平野を見つけ、そこに住みついた。
3彼らは互いに言った。「さあ、れんがを作り、よく焼こう。」彼らは石の代わりにれんがを、漆喰の代わりに瀝青を用いた。
4彼らは言った。「さあ、町を建て、頂が天に届く塔を建てよう。そして名をあげよう。そうすれば全地の面に散らされることはない。」
5主は、人の子らが建てた町と塔を見るために降って来た。

28ハランは父テラより先に、生まれ故郷であるカルデアのウルで死んだ。
29アブラムとナホルは妻を迎えた。アブラムの妻の名はサライ、ナホルの妻の名はミルカで、ハランの娘であった。ハランはミルカとイスカの父である。
30サライは不妊で、子がなかった。
31テラは、息子アブラムと、ハランの子である孫ロトと、息子アブラムの妻である嫁サライとを連れて、カナンの地へ行こうとしてカルデアのウルを出た。しかしハランまで来ると、そこに住みついた。
32テラの生涯は205年であった。テラはハランで死んだ。
1The whole earth had one language and the same words.
2As people moved from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
3They said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and bake them hard." They used brick for stone, and tar for mortar.
4Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the sky, and let us make a name for ourselves, or we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
5The LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building.
6And the LORD said, "Look, they are one people and they all have one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. Now nothing they plan to do will be beyond them.
7Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another's speech."
8So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city.
9That is why it was named Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth, and from there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
10This is the line of Shem. Shem was 100 years old when he fathered Arpachshad, two years after the flood.
11After he fathered Arpachshad, Shem lived 500 years and fathered sons and daughters.
12Arpachshad lived 35 years and fathered Shelah.
13After he fathered Shelah, Arpachshad lived 403 years and fathered sons and daughters.
14Shelah lived 30 years and fathered Eber.
15After he fathered Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and fathered sons and daughters.
16Eber lived 34 years and fathered Peleg.
17After he fathered Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and fathered sons and daughters.
18Peleg lived 30 years and fathered Reu.
19After he fathered Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and fathered sons and daughters.
20Reu lived 32 years and fathered Serug.
21After he fathered Serug, Reu lived 207 years and fathered sons and daughters.
22Serug lived 30 years and fathered Nahor.
23After he fathered Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and fathered sons and daughters.
24Nahor lived 29 years and fathered Terah.
25After he fathered Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and fathered sons and daughters.
26Terah lived 70 years and fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27This is the line of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran fathered Lot.
28Haran died in the presence of his father Terah, in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
29Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, who was the father of Milcah and of Iscah.
30Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, the wife of his son Abram, and they set out together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.
32The days of Terah were 205 years, and Terah died in Haran.
11:1–9は言語の分化を一度の出来事として語るが、10:5・10:20・10:31はすでに諸民族が言語ごとに分かれているとしており、この不整合は二つの層（一般にヤハウィスト資料と祭司資料と呼ばれる）の並置によると説明されることが多い一方、10章を概観、11章をその内実の説明と読む立場もある。「バベル」はアッカド語では bāb-ili（神の門）と解されるが、本文はヘブライ語の「混乱させる」（バーラル）と音を重ねており、語源説明ではなく語呂による命名譚と見るのが通例である。ロトの父ハランと地名ハランはヘブライ語では別語（הָרָן／חָרָן）であり、「カルデアのウル」も南メソポタミアのウルとする説と北方の地とする説がある（人名：セム、アルパクシャド、シェラ、エベル、ペレグ、レウ、セルグ、ナホル、テラ、アブラム、サライ、ロト、ハラン、ミルカ、イスカ）。
