1The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

2As it is written in the prophet Isaiah: "Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your road.

3A voice calls out in the wilderness: Get the Lord's way ready, make his paths straight."

4John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

5The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him, confessed their sins, and were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

6John wore camel hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.

7He proclaimed: "After me comes one stronger than I am. I am not fit to bend down and untie the strap of his sandals.

8I baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan.

10As soon as he came up out of the water he saw the sky torn open and the Spirit coming down on him like a dove.

11And a voice came from the sky: "You are my beloved Son; with you I am pleased."

12At once the Spirit drove him out into the wilderness.

13He was in the wilderness forty days, tested by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels looked after him.

14After John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee proclaiming the good news of God.

15"The time has been filled up," he said, "and the kingdom of God has come near. Change your minds and trust the good news."

16Walking along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Simon's brother Andrew casting a net into the water, for they were fishermen.

17Jesus said to them, "Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of people."

18They left their nets at once and followed him.

19Going on a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in their boat, putting their nets in order.

20He called them right away, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and went off after him.

21They came to Capernaum, and on the Sabbath Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.

22The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not like the scribes.

23Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue, and he shouted,

24"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: God's holy one."

25Jesus rebuked him: "Be quiet, and come out of him."

26The unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions, gave a loud cry, and came out of him.

27Everyone was so astonished that they argued with one another: "What is this? A new teaching, and with authority. He gives orders even to the unclean spirits, and they obey him."

28News about him spread at once everywhere through the whole region around Galilee.

29They left the synagogue and went straight to the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

30Simon's mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever, and they told Jesus about her at once.

31He went to her, took her hand, and raised her up. The fever left her, and she waited on them.

32That evening, after the sun had set, they brought him everyone who was sick or possessed by demons.

33The whole town was gathered at the door.

34He healed many who were sick with all kinds of diseases and drove out many demons, and he would not let the demons speak, because they knew him.

35Very early, while it was still dark, he got up, went out to a deserted place, and prayed there.

36Simon and those with him tracked him down,

37and when they found him they said, "Everyone is looking for you."

38He said to them, "Let us go somewhere else, to the neighboring villages, so that I can proclaim there too. That is what I came out to do."

39So he went through the whole of Galilee, proclaiming in their synagogues and driving out demons.

40A man with a skin disease came to him, knelt down, and begged him, "If you are willing, you can make me clean."

41Moved with pity, Jesus reached out his hand, touched him, and said, "I am willing. Be clean."

42The disease left him at once, and he was clean.

43Jesus sent him away immediately with a stern warning:

44"See that you say nothing to anyone. Go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your cleansing that Moses commanded, as proof to them."

45But the man went out and began to talk freely, spreading the story, so that Jesus could no longer go openly into a town but stayed outside in deserted places. And people kept coming to him from everywhere.

1A few days later Jesus came back to Capernaum, and word got out that he was at home.

2So many people gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he was speaking the word to them.

3Some men came, bringing him a paralyzed man carried by four of them.

4Since they could not get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him, dug through it, and lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on.

5Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, "Son, your sins are forgiven."

6Some scribes were sitting there, thinking to themselves,

7"Why does this man talk like this? He is insulting God. Who can forgive sins but God alone?"

8Jesus knew in his spirit right away what they were thinking, and he said to them, "Why are you turning this over in your minds?

9Which is easier: to tell the paralyzed man 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to tell him 'Get up, pick up your mat and walk'?

10But so that you will know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" — he said to the paralyzed man,

11"I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home."

12The man got up, picked up his mat at once, and walked out in front of them all, so that everyone was astounded and praised God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this."

13Jesus went out again beside the sea. The whole crowd came to him, and he taught them.

14As he walked along he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, "Follow me." Levi got up and followed him.

15While Jesus was at table in Levi's house, many tax collectors and sinners were at table with him and his disciples, for there were many of them and they were following him.

16When the scribes of the Pharisees saw him eating with sinners and tax collectors, they said to his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

17Jesus heard it and told them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

18John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. People came and asked Jesus, "Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but yours do not?"

19Jesus answered, "Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

20But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and on that day they will fast.

21No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth onto an old coat. If he does, the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear gets worse.

22And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are lost. New wine goes into new wineskins."

23One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as they walked his disciples began to pick heads of grain.

24The Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is not allowed on the Sabbath?"

25He answered, "Have you never read what David did when he and the men with him were in need and hungry?

26In the time of Abiathar the high priest he went into the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which only the priests are allowed to eat, and he gave some to the men with him."

27Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath.

28So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.

1Jesus went into the synagogue again, and a man with a shriveled hand was there.

2They watched him closely to see whether he would heal the man on the Sabbath, so that they could bring a charge against him.

3Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand up here in front."

4Then he asked them, "Is it allowed on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save a life or to kill?" They said nothing.

5He looked around at them in anger, grieved at how hard their hearts were, and said to the man, "Hold out your hand." He held it out, and his hand was restored.

6The Pharisees went out and immediately began plotting with the Herodians how to destroy him.

7Jesus withdrew with his disciples toward the sea, and a large crowd from Galilee followed.

8A great many people also came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the region around Tyre and Sidon, because they had heard what he was doing.

9He told his disciples to keep a small boat ready for him, so that the crowd would not crush him,

10since he had healed many, and everyone with an affliction was pushing forward to touch him.

11Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and shouted, "You are the Son of God."

12He warned them sharply not to make him known.

13Jesus went up the mountain and called to himself those he wanted, and they came to him.

14He appointed twelve, so that they would be with him and so that he could send them out to proclaim the message,

15with authority to drive out demons.

16These are the twelve he appointed: Simon, to whom he gave the name Peter;

17James son of Zebedee and his brother John, to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder;

18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot,

19and Judas Iscariot, who handed him over.

20Then Jesus went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat a meal.

21When his family heard about it, they set out to take charge of him, for people were saying that he was out of his mind.

22The scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said, "He has Beelzebul in him," and, "He drives out demons by the ruler of the demons."

23So he called them to him and spoke to them in comparisons: "How can Satan drive out Satan?

24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

25If a household is divided against itself, that household cannot stand.

26And if Satan has turned against himself and is divided, he cannot stand; that is the end of him.

27No one can go into a strong man's house and carry off his goods unless he first ties the strong man up. Then he can rob the house.

28I tell you this: people will be forgiven every sin and every insult they speak,

29but whoever insults the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness; that person is guilty of a lasting sin."

30He said this because they were saying, "He has an unclean spirit."

31His mother and his brothers arrived, and standing outside they sent word to call him.

32A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, "Look, your mother and your brothers are outside asking for you."

33He answered, "Who are my mother and my brothers?"

34Looking at the people sitting in a circle around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers.

35Whoever does what God wants is my brother and sister and mother.

1Again Jesus began to teach beside the sea. Such a large crowd gathered around him that he got into a boat on the water and sat there, while the whole crowd was on the shore facing the water.

2He taught them many things in comparisons, and in his teaching he said:

3"Listen. A sower went out to sow.

4As he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

5Some fell on rocky ground where there was little soil, and it came up quickly because the soil was shallow.

6When the sun rose it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered.

7Some fell among thorn bushes, and the thorns grew up and choked it, so it produced no crop.

8And some fell on good soil, where it came up, grew, and produced a crop, yielding thirty and sixty and a hundred times over."

9Then he said, "Whoever has ears to hear should listen."

10When he was alone, the people around him, together with the twelve, asked him about the comparisons.

11He told them, "To you the secret of the kingdom of God has been given, but to those outside everything comes in comparisons,

12so that they may look and look but not see, and hear and hear but not understand, or else they would turn back and be forgiven."

13Then he said to them, "You do not understand this comparison? Then how will you understand any of them?

14The sower sows the word.

15Some people are like the seed along the path: as soon as they hear the word, Satan comes and carries off what was sown in them.

16Others are like seed sown on rocky ground: they hear the word and take it in gladly right away,

17but they have no root in themselves and do not last. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they give up at once.

18Others are like seed sown among thorn bushes: these are the ones who hear the word,

19but the worries of this age, the lure of wealth, and craving for other things come in and choke the word, so it produces nothing.

20And the ones sown on good soil are those who hear the word and welcome it and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundred times over."

21He also said to them, "Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed? Isn't it to be set on a lampstand?

22Nothing is hidden except to be brought out, and nothing is kept secret except to come into the open.

23Whoever has ears to hear should listen."

24And he said, "Pay attention to what you hear. The measure you use will be used for you, and more will be added.

25Whoever has will be given more; whoever has nothing will lose even what he has."

26He also said, "The kingdom of God is like this: a man scatters seed on the ground.

27Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, and he does not know how.

28The earth produces a crop on its own: first the shoot, then the head, then the full grain in the head.

29As soon as the grain is ready, he sends in the sickle, because the harvest has come."

30And he said, "What can we compare the kingdom of God to? What comparison can we use for it?

31It is like a mustard seed, which is smaller than any seed on earth when it is sown in the ground,

32yet once it is sown it comes up and becomes larger than all the garden plants, with branches so big that the birds of the sky can nest in its shade."

33With many comparisons like these he spoke the word to them, as much as they were able to hear.

34He did not speak to them without a comparison, but privately he explained everything to his own disciples.

35That day, when evening came, he said to them, "Let us go across to the other side."

36Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along in the boat, just as he was, and other boats went with him.

37A fierce windstorm came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was close to swamping.

38Jesus was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. They woke him and said, "Teacher, don't you care that we are going down?"

39He got up, ordered the wind to stop, and said to the sea, "Quiet. Be still." The wind died down, and it became completely calm.

40He said to them, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"

41They were terrified and said to one another, "Who is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him.

1They came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.

2As soon as Jesus stepped out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs to meet him.

3He lived among the tombs, and no one could hold him anymore, not even with a chain.

4He had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he tore the chains apart and broke the shackles to pieces, and no one was strong enough to control him.

5Night and day, among the tombs and in the hills, he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones.

6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and threw himself down before him

7and shouted at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you before God, do not torture me."

8For Jesus had been saying to him, "Come out of this man, you unclean spirit."

9Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" He answered, "My name is Legion, because there are many of us."

10And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of that region.

11A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,

12and the spirits begged him, "Send us to the pigs. Let us go into them."

13He let them, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand of them, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there.

14The men tending the pigs ran off and told it in the town and the countryside, and people came out to see what had happened.

15They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by the legion sitting there, dressed and in his right mind, and they were frightened.

16Those who had seen it told them what had happened to the possessed man, and about the pigs.

17Then they began to beg Jesus to leave their district.

18As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to go with him.

19Jesus would not let him, but said, "Go home to your own people and tell them what the Lord has done for you and how he had mercy on you."

20So the man went off and began to announce in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.

21When Jesus had crossed back over in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him while he was beside the sea.

22One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came up, and when he saw Jesus he fell at his feet

23and pleaded with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be saved and live."

24Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed, pressing in on him.

25A woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years.

26She had been through a great deal at the hands of many doctors and had spent everything she had, and instead of getting better she had grown worse.

27She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,

28for she said to herself, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be saved."

29At once the flow of blood stopped, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.

30Jesus knew at once that power had gone out of him, and he turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"

31His disciples said, "You see the crowd pressing in on you, and you ask, 'Who touched me?'"

32But he kept looking around to see who had done it.

33The woman, knowing what had happened to her, came forward frightened and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth.

34He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace, and be free of your affliction."

35While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader's house and said, "Your daughter has died. Why bother the teacher any longer?"

36Jesus overheard what they said and told the synagogue leader, "Do not be afraid; just believe."

37He let no one go with him except Peter, James, and James's brother John.

38They came to the synagogue leader's house, and Jesus saw the commotion and people weeping and wailing loudly.

39He went in and said to them, "Why all this noise and crying? The child is not dead but asleep."

40They laughed at him. He put them all out, took the child's father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was.

41Taking her by the hand, he said to her, "Talitha koum," which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up."

42The girl got up at once and began to walk around; she was twelve years old. They were completely beside themselves with amazement.

43He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.

1He left there and went to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.

2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard him were astonished and said, "Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom given to him? And these acts of power done by his hands?

3Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.

4Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own house."

5He could do no act of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.

6He was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went around the villages, teaching.

7He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and he gave them authority over unclean spirits.

8He instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff: no bread, no bag, no copper coins in their belts,

9but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics.

10He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that place.

11And if any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, shake off the dust under your feet as you leave, as a testimony against them."

12So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent.

13They drove out many demons, and they anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

14King Herod heard of it, for Jesus' name had become known. People were saying, "John the Baptizer has been raised from the dead, and that is why these powers are at work in him."

15Others said, "He is Elijah." Still others said, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old."

16But when Herod heard it he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised."

17For Herod himself had sent men to seize John and had bound him in prison, because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married.

18John had been telling Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."

19So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not,

20because Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.

21An opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his officials, his officers, and the leading men of Galilee.

22The daughter of Herodias came in and danced, and she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you."

23And he swore to her, "Whatever you ask me I will give you, up to half my kingdom."

24She went out and said to her mother, "What should I ask for?" Her mother said, "The head of John the Baptizer."

25She hurried back in to the king and made her request: "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptizer on a platter."

26The king was deeply grieved, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to refuse her.

27At once the king sent a guard with orders to bring John's head. The man went and beheaded John in the prison,

28brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

29When John's disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

30The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him everything they had done and taught.

31He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a lonely place and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no chance even to eat.

32So they went off in the boat to a lonely place by themselves.

33But many people saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them.

34When Jesus came ashore he saw a great crowd, and he was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.

35When it was already late, his disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and it is already late.

36Send them away so they can go to the farms and villages around here and buy themselves something to eat."

37He answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?"

38He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." When they found out they said, "Five, and two fish."

39Then he told them to have everyone sit down in groups on the green grass.

40So they sat down in rows of hundreds and of fifties.

41Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, spoke the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.

42They all ate and were satisfied.

43And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish.

44Those who had eaten the loaves were five thousand men.

45Right away he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.

46After he had said goodbye to them, he went up the mountain to pray.

47When evening came, the boat was out in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on the land.

48He saw that they were straining at the oars against a headwind, and toward the end of the night he came to them, walking on the lake. He meant to pass by them.

49When they saw him walking on the lake they thought it was a ghost and cried out,

50for they all saw him and were terrified. But at once he spoke to them: "Take heart. It is I. Do not be afraid."

51He climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely astounded,

52for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.

53When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat.

54As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized him.

55They ran through that whole region and began to carry the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.

56And wherever he went, into villages or towns or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.

1The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him.

2They saw that some of his disciples were eating bread with defiled hands, that is, unwashed.

3For the Pharisees, and the Jews generally, do not eat without carefully washing their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders.

4And when they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. There are many other customs they have received and hold to: the washing of cups and jugs and copper vessels.

5So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with defiled hands?"

6He said to them, "Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

7In vain do they worship me, teaching human rules as doctrine.'

8You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition."

9And he said to them, "How skillfully you set aside the commandment of God in order to keep your own tradition.

10For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.'

11But you say that if anyone tells his father or mother, 'Whatever support you might have had from me is Corban' (that is, an offering to God),

12then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.

13So you nullify the word of God by the tradition you have handed down. And you do many things like this."

14He called the crowd to him again and said, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand.

15There is nothing outside a person that can defile him by going into him. It is what comes out of a person that defiles him."

16[If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.]

17When he had left the crowd and entered a house, his disciples asked him about the saying.

18He said to them, "Are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,

19since it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and then passes out of the body?" Thus he declared all foods clean.

20And he said, "What comes out of a person is what defiles him.

21For from within, out of the human heart, come evil intentions: sexual immorality, theft, murder,

22adultery, greed, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, arrogance, folly.

23All these evils come from within, and they defile a person."

24He set out from there and went to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and wanted no one to know, but he could not stay hidden.

25A woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him at once, and she came and fell at his feet.

26The woman was a Greek, Syrophoenician by birth, and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter.

27He said to her, "Let the children be fed first. It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."

28She answered him, "Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."

29He said to her, "For saying that, go. The demon has left your daughter."

30She went home and found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

31Then he left the region of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, through the region of the Decapolis.

32They brought him a man who was deaf and could hardly speak, and they begged him to lay his hand on him.

33He took him aside from the crowd, put his fingers into the man's ears, spat, and touched his tongue.

34Then he looked up to heaven, sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha," which means "Be opened."

35And the man's ears were opened, the bond of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly.

36Jesus ordered them to tell no one. But the more he ordered them, the more widely they proclaimed it.

37They were utterly amazed and said, "He has done everything well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."

1In those days, when again there was a large crowd with nothing to eat, he called his disciples and said to them,

2"I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me three days now and have nothing to eat.

3If I send them home hungry they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a long distance."

4His disciples answered him, "Where could anyone get bread to feed these people here in this deserted place?"

5He asked them, "How many loaves do you have?" They said, "Seven."

6He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves, gave thanks, broke them, and kept giving them to his disciples to set before the people, and they set them before the crowd.

7They also had a few small fish. He blessed them and told the disciples to distribute these as well.

8The people ate and were satisfied, and they took up seven baskets of the broken pieces that were left.

9There were about four thousand people. He sent them away,

10and at once he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.

11The Pharisees came out and began to argue with him, demanding from him a sign from heaven, to test him.

12He sighed deeply in his spirit and said, "Why does this generation demand a sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to this generation."

13And he left them, got into the boat again, and went off to the other side.

14The disciples had forgotten to bring bread; they had only one loaf with them in the boat.

15He warned them, "Watch out. Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod."

16They discussed this with one another, saying it was because they had no bread.

17Aware of it, he said to them, "Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened?

18You have eyes: do you not see? You have ears: do you not hear? And do you not remember?

19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you take up?" They said to him, "Twelve."

20"And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you take up?" They said, "Seven."

21And he said to them, "Do you still not understand?"

22They came to Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him.

23He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. He spat on his eyes, laid his hands on him, and asked him, "Do you see anything?"

24The man looked up and said, "I see people. They look like trees, but they are walking."

25Then Jesus laid his hands on the man's eyes again. He looked hard, and his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.

26Jesus sent him home, saying, "Do not go into the village."

27Jesus went out with his disciples to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"

28They told him, "John the Baptizer; others say Elijah; and others, one of the prophets."

29He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Christ."

30And he warned them to tell no one about him.

31Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man had to suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

32He said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

33But he turned, looked at his disciples, and rebuked Peter: "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not the thoughts of God but the thoughts of human beings."

34Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said, "If anyone wants to follow me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

35For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it.

36What does it profit a person to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?

37What could a person give in exchange for his life?

38Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of that person the Son of Man will be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."

1And he said to them, "I tell you the truth, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

2Six days later Jesus took Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain by themselves, alone. And he was transfigured before them.

3His clothes became a dazzling white, whiter than anyone on earth could bleach them.

4And Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

5Peter spoke up and said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us put up three shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

6He did not know what to say, for they were terrified.

7Then a cloud came and overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud: "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him."

8Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus alone.

9As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

10They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what rising from the dead could mean.

11And they asked him, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

12He said to them, "Elijah does come first and restores all things. Then how is it written of the Son of Man that he must suffer much and be treated with contempt?

13But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, just as it is written of him."

14When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing with them.

15As soon as the whole crowd saw Jesus they were overcome with awe, and they ran up to greet him.

16He asked them, "What are you arguing about with them?"

17A man in the crowd answered him, "Teacher, I brought you my son. He has a spirit that makes him unable to speak.

18Whenever it seizes him it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and goes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive it out, and they could not."

19He answered them, "You faithless generation, how long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me."

20So they brought the boy to him. When the spirit saw Jesus it immediately threw the boy into convulsions, and he fell to the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth.

21Jesus asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" He said, "Since childhood.

22It has often thrown him into fire and into water to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us."

23Jesus said to him, "If you can? Everything is possible for the one who believes."

24At once the boy's father cried out, "I believe. Help my unbelief."

25When Jesus saw that a crowd was running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit: "Spirit that makes him unable to speak or hear, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again."

26The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently, and came out. The boy looked like a corpse, so that many said he had died.

27But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him up, and he stood.

28When Jesus had gone into the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"

29He said to them, "This kind can come out only by prayer."

30They left there and went on through Galilee, and Jesus did not want anyone to know it,

31because he was teaching his disciples. He told them, "The Son of Man is going to be handed over into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed he will rise."

32But they did not understand what he said, and they were afraid to ask him.

33They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the road?"

34They said nothing, for on the road they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.

35He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all."

36Then he took a child and set him in the middle of them, and taking the child in his arms he said to them,

37"Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me."

38John said to him, "Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us."

39But Jesus said, "Do not stop him. No one who does an act of power in my name will soon afterward be able to speak evil of me.

40For whoever is not against us is for us.

41I tell you the truth, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.

42And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a great millstone around his neck.

43If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and go into hell, into the fire that is never put out.

44[Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not put out.]

45And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.

46[Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not put out.]

47And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,

48where their worm does not die and the fire is not put out.

49For everyone will be salted with fire.

50Salt is good, but if the salt loses its saltiness, how will you season it? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with one another."

1He left there and went into the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan. Crowds gathered around him again, and as was his custom he taught them.

2Some Pharisees came up and asked him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife. They were testing him.

3He answered them, "What did Moses command you?"

4They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."

5Jesus said to them, "He wrote you that commandment because your hearts were hard.

6But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female.

7For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,

8and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

9Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."

10In the house the disciples asked him about this again.

11He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her,

12and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."

13People were bringing children to him so that he might touch them, and the disciples scolded them.

14When Jesus saw it he was indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not stop them. The kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

15I tell you the truth, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will never enter it."

16And he took them in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

17As he was setting out on the road, a man ran up, knelt before him, and asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

18Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.

19You know the commandments: do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not defraud, honor your father and mother."

20He said to him, "Teacher, I have kept all these since I was young."

21Jesus looked at him and loved him, and said, "You lack one thing. Go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

22At these words his face fell, and he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God."

24The disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus said to them again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God.

25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God."

26They were even more astounded and said to one another, "Then who can be saved?"

27Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. For God all things are possible."

28Peter began to say to him, "Look, we have left everything and followed you."

29Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for my sake and for the gospel

30who will not receive a hundred times as much now in this present time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, along with persecutions, and in the age to come, eternal life.

31But many who are first will be last, and the last first."

32They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. They were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. Taking the twelve aside again, he began to tell them what was going to happen to him.

33"Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Gentiles.

34They will mock him, spit on him, flog him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise."

35James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask."

36He said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?"

37They said to him, "Let us sit, one at your right and one at your left, in your glory."

38Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?"

39They said to him, "We can." Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism that I am baptized with you will be baptized.

40But to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give. It is for those for whom it has been prepared."

41When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John.

42Jesus called them together and said to them, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.

43It is not to be like that among you. Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,

44and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of all.

45For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

46They came to Jericho. As he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road.

47When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me."

48Many told him sharply to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me."

49Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called the blind man and said to him, "Take heart. Get up. He is calling you."

50He threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus.

51Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "Rabbi, let me see again."

52Jesus said to him, "Go. Your faith has saved you." And at once he could see, and he followed him on the road.

1When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples ahead

2and said to them, "Go into the village ahead of you. As soon as you enter it you will find a colt tied there, one that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it.

3If anyone asks you, 'Why are you doing this?' say, 'The Lord needs it, and he will send it back here at once.'"

4They went and found a colt tied at a door outside on the street, and they untied it.

5Some of the people standing there said to them, "What are you doing, untying that colt?"

6They answered as Jesus had told them, and the people let them go.

7They brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, and he sat on it.

8Many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches they had cut in the fields.

9Those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

10Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!"

11He entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. He looked around at everything, and since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

12The next day, as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.

13Seeing at a distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out whether there was anything on it. When he reached it he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.

14He said to the tree, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." And his disciples heard him.

15They came to Jerusalem, and he went into the temple and began to drive out those who were selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves,

16and he would not let anyone carry goods through the temple courts.

17He taught them, saying, "Is it not written, 'My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations'? But you have made it a den of robbers."

18The chief priests and the scribes heard this and looked for a way to destroy him, for they were afraid of him, since the whole crowd was astonished at his teaching.

19And when evening came, they went out of the city.

20In the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots.

21Peter remembered and said to him, "Rabbi, look, the fig tree you cursed has withered."

22Jesus answered them, "Have faith in God.

23I tell you the truth: if anyone says to this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.

24So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

25And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your wrongs."

26[But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your wrongs.]

27They came again to Jerusalem, and as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to him

28and said, "By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you the authority to do them?"

29Jesus said to them, "I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

30Was John's baptism from heaven, or from human beings? Answer me."

31They argued among themselves: "If we say 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Then why did you not believe him?'

32But if we say 'From human beings'?" They were afraid of the crowd, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.

33So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And Jesus said to them, "Then I will not tell you by what authority I do these things."

1He began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to some farmers and went away on a journey.

2At harvest time he sent a servant to the farmers to collect from them his share of the fruit of the vineyard.

3But they seized the servant, beat him, and sent him away with nothing.

4Again he sent them another servant, and they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully.

5He sent another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some they beat, and some they killed.

6He had one left to send, a son whom he loved. He sent him to them last of all, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

7But those farmers said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'

8So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

9What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy those farmers and give the vineyard to others.

10Have you not read this scripture: 'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

11This came from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"

12They were looking for a way to arrest him, because they knew he had told the parable against them; but they were afraid of the crowd, so they left him and went away.

13They sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to him, to trap him in his words.

14They came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful and that you defer to no one, for you show no partiality but teach the way of God according to the truth. Is it lawful to pay the tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay, or should we not?"

15But he saw through their pretense and said to them, "Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it."

16They brought one, and he said to them, "Whose image is this, and whose inscription?" They said to him, "Caesar's."

17Jesus said to them, "Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God." And they were amazed at him.

18Then some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him,

19"Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no child, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.

20There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and when he died he left no offspring.

21The second took her, and he died leaving no offspring; and the third likewise.

22None of the seven left offspring. Last of all, the woman died too.

23At the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be? For all seven had her as wife."

24Jesus said to them, "Is this not why you are mistaken, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God?

25When people rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels in heaven.

26And about the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?

27He is not the God of the dead but of the living. You are badly mistaken."

28One of the scribes came up and heard them arguing. Seeing that Jesus had answered them well, he asked him, "Which commandment is first of all?"

29Jesus answered, "The first is this: 'Hear, Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

30And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.'

31The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

32The scribe said to him, "Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth: God is one, and there is no other besides him.

33And to love him with all the heart, with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is worth far more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."

34When Jesus saw that he had answered thoughtfully, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And after that no one dared to question him any further.

35While teaching in the temple, Jesus said, "How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?

36David himself, by the Holy Spirit, said: 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet."'

37David himself calls him Lord; how then can he be his son?" And the large crowd listened to him with delight.

38In his teaching he said, "Watch out for the scribes. They like to walk around in long robes and to be greeted in the marketplaces,

39and to have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.

40They devour the houses of widows and say long prayers for show. These will receive a harsher judgment."

41He sat down opposite the treasury and watched the crowd putting money into it. Many rich people put in large amounts.

42A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, worth a quadrans.

43He called his disciples to him and said, "I tell you the truth: this poor widow has put in more than all the others who are putting money into the treasury.

44For they all gave out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, put in everything she had, all she had to live on."

1As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Teacher, look! What huge stones and what buildings!"

2Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."

3As he sat on the Mount of Olives facing the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately,

4"Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?"

5Jesus began to say to them, "Be careful that no one deceives you.

6Many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and they will deceive many.

7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.

8Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

9Watch out for yourselves. They will hand you over to the local councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them.

10And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all the nations.

11When they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Say whatever is given to you at that time, for it is not you speaking but the Holy Spirit.

12Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against their parents and have them put to death.

13You will be hated by everyone because of my name, but the one who endures to the end will be saved.

14When you see the desolating abomination standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains.

15Anyone on the roof must not go down or go inside to take anything out of the house.

16Anyone in the field must not turn back to get a cloak.

17How terrible it will be in those days for women who are pregnant and for those nursing infants!

18Pray that it may not happen in winter.

19For in those days there will be such suffering as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God made until now, and never will be again.

20If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the chosen ones, whom he chose, he has cut them short.

21At that time, if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it.

22For false christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, the chosen ones.

23So be on your guard. I have told you everything in advance.

24But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light.

25The stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

26Then people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.

27And then he will send out the angels and gather his chosen ones from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

28Learn this lesson from the fig tree: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out leaves, you know that summer is near.

29In the same way, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door.

30I tell you the truth: this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.

31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

32But about that day or hour no one knows, not the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

33Be on your guard and stay awake, for you do not know when the time will come.

34It is like a man going away on a journey: he leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his own task, and tells the doorkeeper to stay awake.

35So stay awake, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, in the evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or at dawn,

36or he may come suddenly and find you asleep.

37What I say to you, I say to everyone: stay awake."

1It was two days before the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.

2"Not during the festival," they said, "or there may be a riot among the people."

3While he was in Bethany, reclining at table in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of pure nard, a very costly perfume. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.

4Some there were indignant and said to one another, "Why has this perfume been wasted?

5It could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor." And they scolded her harshly.

6But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why are you troubling her? She has done a good thing for me.

7You will always have the poor with you, and you can do good for them whenever you want; but you will not always have me.

8She has done what she could. She has anointed my body in advance for burial.

9I tell you the truth: wherever the gospel is proclaimed in all the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."

10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests in order to hand Jesus over to them.

11When they heard it they were glad and promised to give him money. And he began looking for a good chance to hand him over.

12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said to him, "Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?"

13So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him,

14and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?'

15He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Prepare for us there."

16The disciples set out and went into the city. They found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

17When evening came, he arrived with the Twelve.

18While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth: one of you will hand me over, one who is eating with me."

19They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, "Surely not I?"

20He said to them, "It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping bread into the bowl with me.

21The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but how terrible for the man by whom the Son of Man is handed over. It would have been better for that man if he had never been born."

22While they were eating, he took bread, gave the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "Take it; this is my body."

23Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

24He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, poured out for many.

25I tell you the truth: I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the day I drink it new in the kingdom of God."

26When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away, for it is written: 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'

28But after I am raised, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."

29Peter said to him, "Even if they all fall away, I will not."

30Jesus said to him, "I tell you the truth: today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times."

31But Peter insisted all the more, "Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you." And they all said the same.

32They came to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray."

33He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.

34He said to them, "My soul is crushed with sorrow, to the point of death. Stay here and keep awake."

35Going on a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour might pass from him.

36"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want."

37He came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not stay awake for one hour?

38Stay awake and pray that you may not come into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

39Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.

40When he came back he found them sleeping again, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to say to him.

41He came a third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough. The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is handed over into the hands of sinners.

42Get up, let us go. Look, the one who is handing me over is here."

43While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, and with him a crowd carrying swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.

44The one who was handing him over had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him and lead him away under guard."

45As soon as he arrived, he went up to Jesus and said, "Rabbi," and kissed him.

46Then they laid hands on him and arrested him.

47One of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to capture me, as though I were a robber?

49Day after day I was with you in the temple, teaching, and you did not arrest me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled."

50Then everyone deserted him and fled.

51A young man was following him, wearing nothing but a linen cloth. They seized him,

52but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.

53They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes came together.

54Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. He was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire.

55The chief priests and the whole council were looking for testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they found none.

56Many gave false testimony against him, but their statements did not agree.

57Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying,

58"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.'"

59Yet even on this point their testimony did not agree.

60Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus: "Have you no answer? What is this testimony these men bring against you?"

61But he was silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest questioned him: "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"

62"I am," said Jesus, "and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven."

63The high priest tore his clothes and said, "Why do we need any more witnesses?

64You have heard the blasphemy. What is your judgment?" And they all condemned him as deserving death.

65Some began to spit at him, to cover his face and strike him, saying, "Prophesy!" And the guards took him and beat him.

66While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by.

67Seeing Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him and said, "You also were with that man from Nazareth, Jesus."

68But he denied it, saying, "I do not know or understand what you are talking about." And he went out into the entryway. [And a rooster crowed.]

69The servant girl saw him there and began again to say to those standing around, "This man is one of them."

70Again he denied it. A little later those standing there said to Peter once more, "You really are one of them, for you are a Galilean."

71But he began to curse and to swear, "I do not know this man you are talking about."

72Immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." And he broke down and wept.

1As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a council with the elders, the scribes, and the whole assembly. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

2Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say so."

3The chief priests brought many charges against him.

4Pilate questioned him again: "Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you."

5But Jesus made no further reply, and Pilate was amazed.

6At the festival Pilate used to release for them one prisoner, whomever they asked for.

7A man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during the uprising.

8The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as he usually did.

9Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?"

10For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over out of envy.

11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead.

12Pilate spoke to them again: "Then what shall I do with the man you call the king of the Jews?"

13They shouted back, "Crucify him!"

14Pilate said to them, "Why? What wrong has he done?" But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"

15Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them; and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.

16The soldiers led him away into the courtyard of the palace, that is, the governor's headquarters, and they called together the whole cohort.

17They dressed him in purple, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on him.

18Then they began to salute him: "Hail, king of the Jews!"

19They struck his head with a reed, spat on him, and knelt down in mock homage.

20When they had finished mocking him, they took off the purple, put his own clothes back on him, and led him out to crucify him.

21They forced a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross.

22They brought him to the place called Golgotha, which means "the place of the skull."

23They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.

24They crucified him and divided his clothes among them, casting lots to decide what each should take.

25It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.

26The inscription of the charge against him read: "The king of the Jews."

27With him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.

28[And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "He was counted among the lawless."]

29Those who passed by insulted him, shaking their heads and saying, "So! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days,

30save yourself and come down from the cross!"

31In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, mocked him among themselves: "He saved others, but he cannot save himself.

32Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe." And those crucified with him also taunted him.

33At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.

34And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?"

35When some of those standing there heard it, they said, "Listen, he is calling Elijah."

36Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered him a drink, saying, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah comes to take him down."

37But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.

38And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.

39When the centurion standing opposite him saw how he breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God."

40There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.

41These women had followed him and cared for him when he was in Galilee, and there were many others who had come up with him to Jerusalem.

42It was already evening, and since it was the day of preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,

43Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

44Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. He called the centurion and asked him whether Jesus had died some time before.

45When he learned it from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

46Joseph bought a linen cloth, took the body down, wrapped it in the linen, and laid it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

1When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they could go and anoint him.

2Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they went to the tomb.

3They were saying to one another, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb for us?"

4But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had already been rolled back; it was very large.

5Entering the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

6He said to them, "Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, this is the place where they laid him.

7Now go and tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.'"

8They went out and fled from the tomb, trembling and bewildered. And they said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

9[Early on the first day of the week, after he had risen, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons.

10She went and told those who had been with him, who were mourning and weeping.

11When they heard that he was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it.

12After this he appeared in another form to two of them as they were walking into the country.

13They went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them either.

14Later he appeared to the eleven as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised.

15He said to them, "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.

16Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

17These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;

18they will pick up snakes with their hands, and if they drink anything deadly it will not harm them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

19So the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.

20And they went out and proclaimed everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied it.]
