The Killing of Tagishimimi and the Palace of Takaoka

Emperor Suizei (Kamununakawamimi) was the third son of Emperor Jimmu (Kamu-Yamato-Iwarebiko). His mother was Himetatara-Isuzuhime no Mikoto, the elder daughter of Kotoshironushi. As a child he already had a bold spirit; when he grew up his frame was large and striking, his skill in arms surpassed other men, and his will was steady and firm.

When he was forty-eight, Emperor Jimmu died. At that time his elder half-brother Tagishimimi no Mikoto was advanced in years and had long been used to the business of government, and he held power at court. But he hid a harsh purpose, and during the mourning he plotted to kill his two younger brothers.

In the year of the younger earth and the hare, Kamununakawamimi learned of the plot and quietly made ready. He had Yumibe no Wakahiko make a bow, Amatsu-maura of the Yamato smiths make the heads for hunting arrows, and the Yabe make the shafts.

When bow and arrows were ready, Kamununakawamimi set out with his elder brother Kamuyaimimi no Mikoto to strike Tagishimimi. Tagishimimi was then in a great earthen chamber at Kataoka, lying alone on a great couch. Kamuyaimimi tried to loose an arrow, but his hands and feet shook and he could not shoot. Kamununakawamimi took the bow and arrows from his brother and shot Tagishimimi himself. The first arrow struck him in the chest, the second in the back, and so he killed him.

Kamuyaimimi drew back and said to his younger brother: "I am the elder, and I lost my nerve and could not do it. You were bold and cleared away the traitor yourself. The throne should be yours." He gave up the succession and withdrew to serve the gods of heaven and earth. He is the first ancestor of the Ō no Omi.

In the first year, in the first month of spring, on the eighth day, Kamununakawamimi took the rank of emperor. He fixed his capital in Katsuragi. It is called the palace of Takaoka. That year was the year of the elder metal and the dragon.

In the second year, in the first month of spring, Isuzuyorihime was made empress. She was the younger daughter of Kotoshironushi. One account calls her Kawamatahime, daughter of the district lord of Shiki; another calls her Itoorihime, daughter of Ōhimoro, district lord of Kasuga. The empress bore Emperor Annei (Shikitsuhiko-Tamatemi).

In the fourth year, in the fourth month of summer, Kamuyaimimi no Mikoto died. He was buried north of Mount Unebi.

In the twenty-fifth year, in the first month of spring, on the seventh day, Shikitsuhiko-Tamatemi was made heir apparent.

In the thirty-third year, in the fifth month of summer, the emperor fell ill, and on the tenth day of that month he died, at the age of eighty-four. In the winter of the following year, in the tenth month, on the eleventh day, he was buried in the tomb on Tsukida Hill in Yamato.

Emperor Annei (Shikitsuhiko-Tamatemi) was the son of Emperor Suizei (Kamununakawamimi). His mother was Isuzuyorihime no Mikoto, the younger daughter of Kotoshironushi. In the twenty-fifth year of Suizei he was made heir apparent, at the age of twenty-one. In the thirty-third year, in the fifth month of summer, Suizei died.

In the first year, in the tenth month of winter, on the third day, the heir apparent took the rank of emperor. He gave the empress the higher title of empress dowager. That year was the year of the younger water and the ox.

In the second year the capital was moved to Katashio. It is called the palace of Ukiana.

In the third year, in the first month of spring, on the fifth day, Nunasokonakatsuhime no Mikoto was made empress. One account calls her Kawatsuhime, daughter of Hae, district lord of Shiki; another calls her Itoihime, daughter of Ōma no Sukune. Before this his consort had borne two princes. The first was called Okishimimi no Mikoto, and the second Emperor Itoku (Ōyamatohiko-Sukitomo). One account says she bore three princes: the first Tokitsuhiko-Iroe, the second Ōyamatohiko-Sukitomo, and the third Shikitsuhiko no Mikoto.

In the eleventh year, in the first month of spring, on the first day, Ōyamatohiko-Sukitomo was made heir apparent. His younger brother Shikitsuhiko no Mikoto is the first ancestor of the Ikai no Muraji.

In the thirty-eighth year, in the eleventh month of winter, on the sixth day, the emperor died, at the age of fifty-seven. In the autumn of the following year, in the eighth month, on the first day, he was buried in the tomb above Mihodo no I, south of Mount Unebi.

Emperor Itoku (Ōyamatohiko-Sukitomo) was the second son of Emperor Annei (Shikitsuhiko-Tamatemi). His mother was Nunasokonakatsuhime no Mikoto, a grandchild of Kotoshironushi and daughter of the prince of Kamo. In the eleventh year of Annei he was made heir apparent, at the age of sixteen. In the thirty-eighth year, in the eleventh month of winter, Annei died.

In the first year, in the second month of spring, on the fourth day, the heir apparent took the rank of emperor. He gave the empress the higher title of empress dowager. That year was the year of the younger metal and the hare.

The empress bore Emperor Kōshō (Mimatsuhiko-Kaeshine).

In the twenty-second year, in the second month of spring, on the twelfth day, Mimatsuhiko-Kaeshine was made heir apparent, at the age of eighteen.

In the thirty-fourth year, in the ninth month of autumn, on the eighth day, the emperor died. In the winter of the following year, in the tenth month, on the thirteenth day, he was buried in the tomb above the Masago valley, south of Mount Unebi.

In the thirty-sixth year of Kōrei he was made heir apparent, at the age of nineteen. In the seventy-sixth year, in the second month of spring, Kōrei died.

In the first year, in the first month of spring, on the fourteenth day, the heir apparent took the rank of emperor. That year was the year of the younger fire and the boar.

In the sixth year, in the ninth month of autumn, on the sixth day, Emperor Kōrei was buried in the tomb on Umasaka at Kataoka.

In the seventh year, in the second month of spring, on the second day, Utsushikome no Mikoto was made empress. She was the younger sister of Utsushikoo no Mikoto, distant ancestor of the Hozumi no Omi. The empress bore two sons and one daughter. The first was called Ōhiko no Mikoto, the second Emperor Kaika (Wakayamatoneko-hiko-Ōhihi), and the third Yamatototohime no Mikoto.

His consort Ikagashikome no Mikoto bore Hikofutsuoshi-no-Makoto no Mikoto. His next consort, Haniyasuhime, daughter of Aotamakake of Kawachi, bore Takehaniyasuhiko no Mikoto.

The elder brother Ōhiko no Mikoto is the first ancestor of seven houses: the Abe no Omi, the Kashiwade no Omi, the Ae no Omi, the Sasakiyama no Kimi, the governors of Tsukushi, the governors of Koshi, and the Iga no Omi.

In the twenty-second year, in the first month of spring, on the fourteenth day, Wakayamatoneko-hiko-Ōhihi was made heir apparent, at the age of sixteen.

In the fifty-seventh year, in the ninth month of autumn, on the second day, the emperor died. Later, in the fifth year of Emperor Kaika, in the second month of spring, on the sixth day, he was buried in the tomb on the island of Tsurugi Pond.

Emperor Kaika (Wakayamatoneko-hiko-Ōhihi) was the second son of Emperor Kōgen (Ōyamatoneko-hiko-Kunikuru). In the first year, in the eleventh month of winter, on the twelfth day, the heir apparent took the rank of emperor. He gave the empress the higher title of empress dowager. That year was the year of the elder wood and the monkey. The capital was moved to Kasuga. It is called the palace of Izakawa.

In the fifth year, in the second month of spring, on the sixth day, Emperor Kōgen was buried in the tomb on the island of Tsurugi Pond.

In the sixth year, in the first month of spring, on the fourteenth day, Ikagashikome no Mikoto was made empress. She had formerly been a consort of Emperor Kōgen. The empress bore Emperor Sujin (Mimakiirihiko-Inie).
