Jimmu's Lineage and the Plan to Go East

Emperor Jimmu (Kamu-Yamato-Iwarebiko) bore the personal name Hikohohodemi. He was the fourth son of Ugayafukiaezu (Hikonagisatake-Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto), and his mother was Tamayoribime (Tamayorihime), a daughter of the sea god. From birth he was clear of mind and firm of will. At fifteen he was made heir. When he had grown he married Ahiratsuhime of the village of Ata in Hyuga, and she bore Tagishimimi no Mikoto. His elder brothers were Itsuse (Hikoitsuse no Mikoto), Inahi no Mikoto, and Mikeirino no Mikoto.

When he was forty-five he said to his brothers and his children: "Long ago the heavenly gods Takamimusuhi and Amaterasu gave this land of reed plains and fresh rice-ears to our ancestor Ninigi (Amatsuhikohiko-Ho-no-Ninigi no Mikoto). He opened the barrier of heaven, pushed aside the cloud paths, sent runners ahead, and came down. In those days the world was newly opened, and the way was not yet settled. So even here in this outlying and unfinished country our house has ruled by its own virtue and has kept to what is right.

From the descent of our heavenly ancestor to this day, more than 1,792,470 years have passed. Yet the far districts still have no share in the rule. Each village has its chief, each hamlet its head, and each marks off his own borders and fights the rest.

I asked the old man of the sea, Shiotsuchi no Oji, and he said: 'To the east there is a fair land. Blue mountains ring it on every side, and within it someone came flying down riding a rock boat of heaven.' In my judgment that land is wide enough to spread a great undertaking over and to cover the world from. It is surely the center of the six directions. The one who came flying down must be Nigihayahi. Why should we not go there and make it our capital?"

The princes all answered: "The reasoning is plain. We too have long thought so. It should be done at once." That year was the year of the elder wood and the tiger.

From Hyuga to the Palace of Takashima

In the tenth month of that year, on the fifth day, the emperor himself led the princes and a fleet eastward. At the strait of Hayasui a fisherman came out in a small boat. The emperor called him over and asked, "Who are you?" He answered, "I am a god of this land. My name is Uzuhiko. I was fishing along the bay. I heard that the child of the heavenly gods was coming, and so I came to meet you." The emperor asked, "Can you act as guide for me?" He said, "I can." The emperor held out the end of a pole of oak, drew him aboard, and made him pilot. He gave him the new name Shiinetsuhiko. This man is the ancestor of the Yamato no Atai.

They went on and reached Usa in Tsukushi. There Usatsuhiko and Usatsuhime, ancestors of the governors of Usa, built a palace on one pillar on the bank of the Usa river and held a feast. At that time the emperor gave Usatsuhime in marriage to his attendant Ame-no-Taneko (Ame-no-Taneko no Mikoto), who is the distant ancestor of the Nakatomi.

On the ninth day of the eleventh month they reached the harbor of Oka in Tsukushi. On the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month they reached the province of Aki and stayed in the palace of E.

In the year of the younger wood and the hare, on the sixth day of the third month, they moved into the province of Kibi and put up a temporary residence, called the palace of Takashima. They stayed there three years, repairing boats and oars and storing arms and provisions, meaning to settle the whole land in one stroke.

Defeat at Kusae Slope and the Death of Itsuse

In the year of the elder earth and the horse, in the second month, on the eleventh day, the army at last set out eastward. At the cape of Naniwa the current ran fast and carried them in very quickly, so the place was named the land of Namihaya, also called Naniwa. What is now called Naniwa is a corruption of that.

On the tenth day of the third month they went up the river and reached the harbor of Shirakata under the blue clouds, in the village of Kusaka in the province of Kawachi.

On the ninth day of the fourth month, in summer, the army put its troops in order and marched on foot toward Tatsuta. But the road was narrow and steep and men could not walk abreast. So they turned back and tried instead to cross Mount Ikoma further east and enter the inner country. When Nagasunehiko (Nagasunehiko) heard of it he said, "The children of the heavenly gods are coming to take my country from me." He called up every soldier under him and met them at the slope of Kusae. A stray arrow struck Itsuse (Hikoitsuse no Mikoto) in the arm. The army could not press the fight.

The emperor, troubled, formed a plan in his mind and said: "I am a descendant of the sun, and I am attacking my enemy facing into the sun. This runs against the way of heaven. Better to fall back, show weakness, make offerings to the gods, and then carry the power of the sun on our backs and bear down on them along the line of our own shadows. If we do that, the enemy will be beaten of themselves, without our blades being reddened." All said, "It is so." He gave the order through the ranks: "Halt for now. Advance no further." He drew the army back, and the enemy did not press after them.

They fell back to the harbor of Kusaka, set up their shields there, and raised a war cry. For this the harbor was renamed Tatetsu, the harbor of shields. What is now called Tadetsu is a corruption of that.

Earlier, in the fighting at Kusae, a man had escaped harm by hiding behind a great tree. He pointed at the tree and said, "Its kindness is like a mother's." From this the people of the time named that place the village of Omoki, the mother tree. What is now called Omonoki is a corruption of that.

On the eighth day of the fifth month the army reached the harbor of Yamaki in Chinu. There the arrow wound of Itsuse grew worse. He stroked his sword, gave a war cry, and said: "How bitter it is. I am a grown man, and I take a wound at the hands of the enemy and die without repaying it." From this the people of the time named the place Onominato, the harbor of the man.

They went on and came to Mount Kamayama in the province of Kii, and there Itsuse died among the troops. So he was buried at Mount Kamayama.

Around Kii to Kumano, Where the Army Falls

On the twenty-third day of the sixth month the army reached the village of Nagusa and put to death one called Nagusatobe. They then crossed the moor of Sano, came to the village of the gods in Kumano, and climbed the rock shield of heaven.

From there they led the army on, but out at sea a sudden gale struck and the ships were driven about. Then Inahi no Mikoto cried out: "Our forefathers are gods of heaven and our mother is a god of the sea. Why then am I harried on land and harried again at sea?" With that he drew his sword, went into the sea, and became the god Sabimochi.

Mikeirino no Mikoto also spoke in resentment: "My mother and my aunt are both gods of the sea. Why then do they raise the waves to drown us?" And treading on the waves he went away to the land beyond.

The emperor went on alone with his son Tagishimimi no Mikoto, leading the army, and reached the harbor of Arasaka in Kumano, also called the bay of Nishiki. There he put to death one called Nishikitobe. At this the god of that place breathed out a poisonous vapor that left men limp, and the army could not raise itself again.

Takakuraji's Dream and the Sword Futsu-no-Mitama

At that time there lived in that place a man of Kumano called Takakuraji. In the night he had a dream. Amaterasu (Amaterasu Ōmikami) said to Takemikazuchi (Takemikazuchi no Kami): "I still hear the noise of disorder in the central land of reed plains. Go once more and put it down." Takemikazuchi answered: "Even if I do not go myself, I can send down the sword with which I settled that land, and the country will come to order of itself." Amaterasu said, "Good."

Then Takemikazuchi said to Takakuraji: "My sword is called Futsu-no-mitama. I shall now set it inside your storehouse. Take it and present it to the grandchild of heaven." Takakuraji said, "I will," and with that he woke.

The next morning he opened the storehouse as the dream had told him, and there indeed stood a sword, point down and upright on the floorboards. He took it and presented it to the emperor.

The emperor happened at that moment to be asleep. He woke suddenly and said, "Why have I slept so long?" Before long the soldiers who had been struck by the poison also woke and stood up, every one of them.

The army tried to make its way toward the inner country, but the mountains were steep and there was no road forward. They were brought to a stop and could neither advance nor turn back.

The Yatagarasu Guide and Michi no Omi

That night Amaterasu (Amaterasu Ōmikami) appeared to the emperor in a dream and told him: "I am now sending the eight-span crow. Make it your guide." And the Yatagarasu (the eight-span crow) came down out of the sky.

The emperor said: "The coming of this crow matches my good dream exactly. How great it is, how bright. My ancestor Amaterasu means by this to help me build the foundation of our house."

At that time Hi no Omi no Mikoto, the distant ancestor of the Ōtomo, took command of the main force with Ōkume (the Ōkume troops) under him, cut a path through the mountains, and followed the crow, looking up and going after it wherever it turned. At last they reached the lower district of Uda. For this they named the place they had reached the village of Ukachi in Uda, the place that was bored through.

The emperor praised Hi no Omi no Mikoto and said: "You are loyal and you are brave, and you have the merit of having led the way. So I change your name to Michi no Omi, the minister of the road."

Eukashi's Trap and Mount Takakura in Uda

In the eighth month of autumn, on the second day, the emperor summoned Eukashi and Otoukashi. The two were headmen of the district of Uda. Eukashi did not come. Otoukashi came alone, bowed at the gate of the camp, and said: "My elder brother Eukashi heard that the grandchild of heaven was coming and meant to raise troops and attack. But when he saw the strength of your army he was afraid and thought he could not match it. So he has hidden his men, put up a temporary hall, and set a deadfall inside it. He means to invite you to a feast and kill you there. Please know his plan."

The emperor at once sent Michi no Omi no Mikoto to test the man's mind. Michi no Omi saw plainly that he meant harm, and in great anger he shouted at him: "You, robber — go into the house you built yourself." Gripping his sword and drawing his bow, he drove him inside. Eukashi had sinned against heaven and had no words to escape with, so he stepped on his own device and was crushed. They dragged out the body and cut it, and the blood that ran covered their ankles. For this the place is called the Blood Plain of Uda.

After this Otoukashi set out cattle and sake in quantity and feasted the army. The emperor shared the meat and drink among the soldiers, and made this song.

On the high fort of Uda

I set a snare for snipe.

I waited,

but no snipe was caught.

A great whale was caught.

If my first wife asks for meat,

give her the lean part, thin as the fruit of the standing sobanoki.

If my later wife asks for meat,

give her the full part, thick as the fruit of the ichisakaki.

Ee, shiya go shiya!

This is a jeer.

Aa, shiya go shiya!

This is a laugh.

This is called a Kume song. When it is performed at court today, there is still a wide beat and a narrow beat measured by the hand, and a heavy voice and a light one. This is the old usage.

In the ninth month, on the fifth day, the emperor climbed to the top of Mount Takakura in Uda and looked out over the country. On the hill of Kunimi were the eighty warriors. At the woman's slope he saw a company of women, at the man's slope a company of men, and at the ink slope a heap of burning charcoal. The names of the woman's slope, the man's slope and the ink slope come from this. The troops of Eshiki also filled the village of Iware. Every place the enemy held was a strong one, the roads were cut and blocked, and there was nowhere to pass.

The emperor hated this, and that night he prayed and lay down to sleep. A god of heaven came to him in a dream and taught him: "Take earth from inside the shrine on Mount Ame-no-Kagu, make eighty flat vessels of heaven, and make a sacred jar as well, and honor the gods of heaven and earth with them. Then lay a solemn curse on your enemies. If you do this they will submit of themselves."

The emperor took the teaching of the dream and was about to act on it. Just then Otoukashi spoke again: "In the village of Shiki in Yamato there are the eighty warriors of Shiki, and in the village of Takaowari there are the eighty warriors of the red copper. All of them mean to fight you. I am troubled on your behalf. Take the clay of Mount Ame-no-Kagu now, make the flat vessels of heaven, make offering to the gods of the heavenly shrines and the earthly shrines, and strike your enemies after that. Then they will not be hard to sweep away." The emperor had already taken the words of the dream for a good sign, and hearing this he was gladder still.

He then dressed Shiinetsuhiko in worn clothes and a straw cape and hat so that he looked like an old man, and dressed Otoukashi in a winnowing basket so that he looked like an old woman, and said: "Go, the two of you, to Mount Ame-no-Kagu. Take the earth from its top in secret and come back." They took the order and went out. The enemy troops filled the road and they could not get through. Shiinetsuhiko prayed: "If our lord is to settle this land, let the road open of itself. If not, let the enemy surely stop us." Then he walked on. The enemy saw the pair and laughed loudly, saying, "What a shabby old man and old woman," and they opened the road and let them pass. The two reached the mountain, took the earth, and came back.

The emperor was very glad. With that clay he made the eighty flat vessels, the eighty heavenly hand-cups, and the sacred jar, and went up to the headwaters of the Nyu river and made offering to the gods of heaven and earth.

The Eighty Warriors of Kunimi and the Chamber at Osaka

At the plain of Asa on the Uda river the emperor made a vow: "With these eighty flat vessels I shall make sweet gruel without water. If the gruel forms, then I shall settle the realm sitting still, without using arms." He made the gruel, and the gruel formed of itself.

He made another vow: "I shall sink the sacred jar in the Nyu river. If the fish, great and small alike, are all made drunk and float down like maki leaves on the water, then I shall surely settle this land. If not, nothing will come of it." He sank the jar in the river. Its mouth turned downward. After a while the fish all came up, gaping, and drifted with the current. Shiinetsuhiko saw it and reported it. The emperor was very glad, and he pulled up five hundred true sakaki trees from the headwaters of the Nyu and made offering to all the gods. The use of the sacred jar began here.

Then the emperor gave this order to Michi no Omi no Mikoto: "I shall now worship Takamimusuhi myself, in open rite. You shall be the officiant, and I give you the name Itsuhime. The clay jar we have set out shall be called the sacred jar; the fire shall be called Itsu-no-Kaguzuchi, the water Itsu-no-Mizuhanome, the food Itsu-no-Uka-no-Metama, the firewood Itsu-no-Yamazuchi, and the grass Itsu-no-Nozuchi."

In the tenth month of winter, on the first day, the emperor tasted the food of the sacred jar, put his troops in order, and marched out. First he struck the eighty warriors on the hill of Kunimi, broke them and cut them down. In this action he set his mind on certain victory and made this song.

On the great rocks

of the sea of Ise,

where the god-wind blows,

the little shellfish

creeps round and round.

My lads, my lads,

like that little shellfish

we will creep round them

and strike, and not stop.

Strike, and not stop.

Many of the rest of that band were still at large, and what was in their minds could not be measured. So he ordered Michi no Omi no Mikoto: "Take the Ōkume troops, build a great chamber in the village of Osaka, hold a great banquet, and draw the enemy in and take them." Michi no Omi took the secret order, dug out a chamber at Osaka, chose the bravest of his own men, and seated them among the enemy. He agreed with them in secret: "When the drinking is at its height I shall stand and sing. When you hear my voice, stab the enemy all together."

They sat and drank. The enemy did not know there was a plan and grew drunk as they pleased. Michi no Omi stood up and sang.

In the great chamber house

at Osaka,

many have come in and are sitting.

Though many are sitting there,

the sons of Kume, the strong ones,

with their mallet-headed swords,

with their stone-headed swords,

will strike, and not stop.

The soldiers heard the song, drew their mallet-headed swords, and killed the enemy all at once. Not one of them was left alive. The army was overjoyed and laughed up at the sky. Then they sang.

Now is the time,

now is the time.

Aa, shiya wo!

Even now,

my lads.

Even now,

my lads.

The great laugh that the Kume troops give after singing today comes from this old usage. They sang again.

One man of Emishi,

people say,

is a match for a hundred,

yet they did not even resist.

All of these were sung on the secret order given them, not made up on their own.

The Fall of Eshiki and the Golden Kite

In the eleventh month, on the seventh day, the army mustered in force to attack Eshiki. First a messenger was sent to summon him, but Eshiki would not obey. So the Yatagarasu, the eight-span crow, was sent to summon him. The crow came to his camp and cried out: "The child of the heavenly gods summons you. Come, come." Eshiki was angry and said, "I heard that a god who oppresses heaven had come, and I was already furious. Why does this crow bird cry so ill-omened a cry?" He drew his bow and shot at it. The crow flew away.

Next it came to the house of Otoshiki and cried out the same words. Otoshiki was struck with awe and said: "I heard that the child of the heavenly gods was coming, and I have stood in reverence morning and evening. Well have you told me, crow." He made eight leaf platters, heaped food on them, and gave the bird a meal. Then he followed the crow and came to the emperor and said: "My elder brother Eshiki heard that the child of the heavenly gods was coming. He has gathered the eighty warriors, made ready weapons, and means to fight it out. Decide quickly."

The emperor gathered his commanders and asked them: "Eshiki does have a rebel's mind after all. He was summoned and did not come. What should be done?" They said: "Eshiki is a crafty enemy. Send Otoshiki first to reason with him, and let him reason with Ekurashi and Otokurashi as well. If they still will not submit, it will not be too late to raise troops then." So Otoshiki was sent to set out the gain and the loss, but Eshiki and the rest held to their foolish plan and would not yield.

Then Shiinetsuhiko laid a plan: "Let us first send our company of women out by the Osaka road. The enemy will see them and send out all their best troops against them. We will then drive our strongest men straight for the ink slope, take water from the Uda river, pour it on the burning charcoal there, and fall on them unawares. They cannot but be broken." The emperor approved the plan and sent the company of women out to face them. The enemy thought a great force had come and waited for it with all their strength. Wherever the army attacked, it took; wherever it struck, it made them submit; and nothing stood against it. But there was still fight left in the rear ranks, and to use it up they sang.

In the millet field

of the sons of Kume, the strong ones,

stands one stalk of rank-smelling leek.

Root and stalk and shoot together

we will pull it up,

and strike, and not stop.

Then he loosed the picked troops and struck the enemy, and Eshiki and the rest were cut down at last.

In the twelfth month, on the fourth day, the army at last attacked Nagasunehiko (Nagasunehiko). They fought battle after battle and could not win. Then the sky suddenly darkened and hail fell, and a wondrous kite of gold came flying and settled on the tip of the emperor's bow. The kite shone and glittered, and it was like a flash of lightning. The soldiers of Nagasunehiko were all dazzled and could not fight with their full strength. Nagasune was the old name of a village; it was taken as the man's name as well. Because the army had received the sign of the kite, the people of the time called that place the village of the kite. What is now called Tomi is a corruption of that.

Earlier, in the fighting at Kusae, Itsuse (Hikoitsuse no Mikoto) had been struck by an arrow and had died. The emperor kept this in his heart and always carried the grief of it. In this action he meant to repay it, and he sang.

Under the hedge

of the sons of Kume, the strong ones,

grows the pepper we planted.

It stings in the mouth.

I shall not forget it.

We will strike, and not stop.

And he sang again.

Shields set in a row,

through the gaps in the trees

of Mount Inasa

we have gone on, keeping watch,

and fighting so

we have grown hungry.

You birds of the isles,

you keepers of cormorants,

come now and help us.

Nigihayahi Submits and Nagasunehiko Dies

Nagasunehiko (Nagasunehiko) sent a messenger to the emperor and said: "Long ago a child of the heavenly gods came down from heaven riding a rock boat of heaven. His name is Kushitama-Nigihayahi no Mikoto. He married my younger sister Mikashikiyahime, also called Nagasunehime and Tomiyahime, and she bore a son, Umashimade no Mikoto. So I serve Nigihayahi as my lord. Can there be two kinds of children of the heavenly gods? How is it that you call yourself one and try to take another man's land? In my judgment it is a lie."

The emperor said: "There are many children of the heavenly gods. If the one you take for lord is truly such a child, he must have a token. Show it." Nagasunehiko brought out one heavenly feathered arrow and a walking quiver belonging to Nigihayahi (Nigihayahi no Mikoto) and showed them to the emperor. The emperor looked and said, "It is no lie." Then he showed Nagasunehiko his own heavenly feathered arrow and walking quiver. Nagasunehiko saw the heavenly token and was more afraid than before. But the weapons were already set out, the movement could not be stopped in the middle, and he held to his mistaken purpose with no mind to change it.

Nigihayahi knew from the first that the heavenly gods gave their deep care to the grandchild of heaven alone. He saw also that Nagasunehiko was crooked in nature, and that it was of no use to teach him the difference between the heavenly gods and other men, and so he killed him. He then led his own people and submitted. The emperor had heard from the beginning that Nigihayahi had come down from heaven, and since he had now shown loyalty, the emperor praised him and favored him. He is the distant ancestor of the Mononobe.

In the year of the younger earth and the sheep, in the second month of spring, on the twentieth day, the emperor ordered his commanders to drill the troops. At that time there was one called Niiki-tobe at the cape of Hata hill in the district of Sofu; one called Kose-no-hafuri at the foot of the slope of Wani; and one called I-no-hafuri at the cape of Nagara hill in Hozomi. The Tsuchigumo of these three places trusted their own strength and would not come to court, so the emperor sent out detachments and put them all to death.

There were Tsuchigumo also in the village of Takaowari. Their bodies were short and their arms and legs long, like dwarfs. The army wove nets of vine, threw them over them, and killed them. For this the village was renamed Katsuragi, the vine fortress.

The old name of the land of Iware was Katai, also called Katatachi. When the army broke the enemy there, the great host gathered and filled the place, and so the name was changed to Iware. Others say that when the emperor earlier tasted the food of the sacred jar and sent out his army westward, the eighty warriors of Shiki were massed there, fought a great battle with him, and were destroyed by the imperial army, and that the village was named Iware from that. The place where the army raised its war cry is called Takeda, and the place where it built a fort is called Kida. The place where the enemy fell dead and lay pillowed on their own arms is called Tsuramakida.

The Edict on the Capital and the Accession at Kashihabara

In the year of the younger earth and the sheep, in the third month of spring, on the seventh day, he gave this order.

"Six years have passed since I set out to conquer the east. Trusting to the power of heaven above, the wicked have been put down. The outlying districts are not yet cleared and what remains of the trouble is still stubborn, but in the inner country there is no more disturbance. It is right now to widen the capital and lay out a great design for it. Yet the age is still young, the minds of the people are plain, and living in nests and in caves has become their settled custom. When a great man sets up an institution, what is right must follow the times. If a thing benefits the people, it can be no hindrance to the work of a sage. Let us clear away the mountain forests, build a palace, take the noble seat in reverence, and give the people peace. Above, we shall answer the goodness of the heavenly gods who granted us the land; below, we shall spread the mind of the grandchild of heaven, who fostered what is right. After that, to join the six directions and open a capital there, and to cover the eight cords of the world so that they make one house — would that not be well? Look at the land of Kashihabara, southeast of Mount Unebi. It must be the innermost heart of the country. Let it be governed from there."

In that month he ordered his officials to begin building the capital.

In the year of the younger metal and the cock, in the first month of spring, on the first day, the emperor took the imperial seat in the palace of Kashihabara. That year is counted the first year of his reign.

The Empress, the Reign, and the Tomb at Unebi

In the year of the elder metal and the monkey, in the eighth month of autumn, on the sixteenth day, the emperor wished to appoint a principal consort and sought widely among the daughters of the great houses. Someone told him: "Kotoshironushi (Kotoshironushi no Kami) had a daughter by Tamakushihime, the daughter of Mishima-no-Mizokui-mimi. Her name is Himetatara-Isuzuhime no Mikoto, and she is the fairest in the land." The emperor was glad. On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month he received Himetatara-Isuzuhime no Mikoto and made her his principal consort.

In the first month of the first year of his reign, the year of the younger metal and the cock, the emperor honored his principal consort and made her empress. She bore the princes Kamuyai no Mikoto and Kamununakawamimi no Mikoto (Emperor Suizei).

In the second year of his reign, in the second month of spring, on the second day, the emperor weighed merit and gave rewards. He granted Michi no Omi no Mikoto a homestead in the village of Tsukisaka and favored him especially. He settled the Ōkume troops in the land by the river west of Mount Unebi; the present village of Kume is named from this. He made Uzuhiko governor of Yamato. He granted Otoukashi the village of Takeda and made him district lord of Takeda; he is the distant ancestor of the water officers of Uda. He made Otoshiki, whose name was Kurohaya, district lord of Shiki, and made a man called Tsuruginé governor of Katsuragi. The Yatagarasu, the eight-span crow, was also placed among those rewarded; its descendants are the household officers of the district of Kadono.

In the fourth year, in the second month of spring, on the twenty-third day, he decreed: "The spirits of my ancestors came down from heaven and looked on me, and shone on me and helped me. Now every enemy is subdued and there is no trouble in the land. Let me worship the heavenly gods in the open and declare my great filial duty." So he set up a place of worship among the hills of Tomi, named the ground the alder plain of Upper Ono and the alder plain of Lower Ono, and made offering there to the heavenly gods of his line.

In the thirty-first year, in the fourth month of summer, on the first day, the emperor made a progress. He climbed the hill of Hohoma at Wakigami, looked out over the country, and said: "What a fine land I have got. Narrow though it is, like a strip of inner mulberry cloth, the mountains ring it about as a dragonfly's tail curves round on itself." From this the name Akitsushima, the dragonfly isles, was first used.

Long ago Izanagi (Izanagi no Mikoto) named this land and said: "Yamato is the land of peaceful shores, the land of a thousand fine spears, the excellent land ringed by rock and shore." Ōkuninushi (Ōnamuchi no Ōkami) named it and said, "The land within the jeweled fence." Nigihayahi (Nigihayahi no Mikoto) rode the rock boat of heaven, circled the wide sky, looked down on this place, and came down to it, and so he named it "the land of Yamato seen from the empty sky."

In the forty-second year, in the first month of spring, on the third day, he made Kamununakawamimi no Mikoto crown prince.

In the seventy-sixth year, in the third month of spring, on the eleventh day, the emperor died in the palace of Kashihabara. He was then one hundred and twenty-seven years old. In the autumn of the following year, on the twelfth day of the ninth month, he was buried in the tomb northeast of Mount Unebi.
