Heaven and earth divide and three gods come into being
Long ago heaven and earth were not yet split apart, and yin and yang were not yet divided. Everything was churned together like the inside of a hen's egg, dim and holding the first faint sign of growth. In time what was clear and light spread out thin and drifted upward and became the sky, and what was heavy and murky sank and settled and became the ground. What is fine and subtle joins together easily; what is heavy and murky hardens only with difficulty. So the sky took form first, and the ground was settled afterward. Gods were then born in between.
For this reason it is said: at the opening of things the land drifted about, the way a swimming fish floats at the surface of the water.
At that time one thing came into being between sky and ground. Its shape was like a shoot of reed. It turned into a god, and his name was Kuni-no-Tokotachi. Next came Kuni-no-Satsuchi, and next Toyokumunu. Three in all. Each came into being from the male principle acting alone, and so all three were male.
A thing in the void becomes Kuni-no-Tokotachi
When heaven and earth first divided, one thing was there in the middle of the void. Its shape and form are hard to describe. Out of it a god came into being of itself. His name was Kuni-no-Tokotachi. He is also called Kuni-no-Sokotachi.
Next was Kuni-no-Satsuchi, also called Kuni-no-Satachi.
Next was Toyokuninushi, who is also called Toyokumuno, Toyokabuno, Ukabuno-toyokau, Toyokunino, Toyokuhuno, Hakikunino, and Mino.
A reed shoot becomes Umashiashikabihikoji first
Long ago, when the land was still young and the ground still young, it was as though oil were floating and drifting on water. At that time something was born in the middle of the land, shaped like a reed shoot pushing up. From this a god came into being, and his name was Umashiashikabihikoji. Next came Kuni-no-Tokotachi, and next Kuni-no-Satsuchi.
A godlike being appears while heaven and earth are still mingled
When heaven and earth were still mingled together, there was first a godlike being. His name was Umashiashikabihikoji. Next was Kuni-no-Sokotachi.
Ame-no-Minakanushi and the two Musuhi are born in the plain of high heaven
When heaven and earth first divided, there were gods who came into being together at the start. The name of one was Kuni-no-Tokotachi. Next was Kuni-no-Satsuchi.
It is also said: the names of the gods born in the plain of high heaven were Ame-no-Minakanushi, then Takamimusuhi, then Kamimusuhi.
Kuni-no-Tokotachi takes shape from a cloud floating on the sea
When heaven and earth had not yet come into being, it was like a cloud floating over the sea, with no root holding it anywhere. In the middle of it one thing was born, like a reed shoot first sprouting up out of mud. It at once took human form. Its name was Kuni-no-Tokotachi.
Ame-no-Tokotachi comes into being first
When heaven and earth first divided, there was something like a reed shoot that grew up in the empty air. From it a god took shape, and his name was Ame-no-Tokotachi. Next was Umashiashikabihikoji.
There was also something like floating oil that grew up in the empty air. From it a god took shape, and his name was Kuni-no-Tokotachi.
The seven generations of the age of the gods
Next there were gods: Uhijini and Suhijini.
Next there were gods: Ōtonoji and Ōtomabe.
Next there were gods: Omodaru and Kashikone.
Next there were gods: Izanaki and Izanami.
Eight in all. They came into being from the way of sky and the way of earth mixing with each other, and so male and female were formed.
From Kuni-no-Tokotachi down to Izanaki and Izanami is called the seven generations of the age of the gods.
A version that counts Tsunogui and Ikugui
The gods born as male and female pairs were, first, Uhijini and Suhijini. Next were Tsunogui and Ikugui. Next were Omodaru and Kashikone. Next were Izanaki and Izanami.
A version making the two gods children of Awokashikine
These two gods are the children of Awokashikine.
The jewel spear from the floating bridge of heaven makes Onogoro Island
Izanaki and Izanami stood on the floating bridge of heaven and talked it over together. They said, "Can it be that there is no land down below?"
So they pointed the jewel spear of heaven downward and felt about with it, and found the blue sea. The brine that dripped from the point of the spear hardened and became an island. They named it Onogoro Island.
The two gods came down and settled on that island, and there they meant to become husband and wife and give birth to lands.
The heavenly gods order them down to put the land in order
The heavenly gods said to Izanaki and Izanami, "There is a land of fresh rice ears, the reed plain of a thousand and five hundred autumns. Go down and put it in order." Then they handed over the jewel spear of heaven.
So the two gods stood on the floating bridge above and thrust the spear down to search for land, stirring the blue sea and drawing the spear up again. The brine that dripped from the point of the spear set and became an island. They named it Onogoro Island.
The two gods came down and settled on that island. There they made an eight-fathom hall appear, and made a pillar of heaven stand.
The woman speaks first, and the eight great islands are born
Izanaki and Izanami went round the pillar of the land and met on one side of it.
Then the woman spoke first: "How glad I am. I have met a fine man."
The man was not pleased and said: "I am a man. By rights I should have spoken first. Why has the woman spoken first instead? This is already a bad sign. We had better turn back and go round again."
So the two drew apart and met once more. This time the man spoke first: "How glad I am. I have met a fine woman."
Then he asked her, "How is your body formed?" She answered, "In my body there is one place that is the source of the female." He said, "In my body there is also a place that is the source of the male. I want to join the source-place of my body to the source-place of yours."
So female and male joined for the first time and became husband and wife.
When the time came to give birth, the island of Awaji came first, as the afterbirth. It gave them no pleasure, and so they named it Awaji.
Next she bore Oyamato-no-Toyoakitsu-shima. Next Iyo-no-Futana-shima. Next Tsukushi-shima. Next Oki-shima and Sado-shima together, as twins; when twins are born among people, it follows this. Next Koshi-shima. Next Oshima. Next Kibi-no-ko-shima.
From this arose the name Oyashima-guni, the land of the eight great islands.
Tsushima and Iki, and the small islands here and there, were all made when the foam of the tide hardened. It is also said that they were made when the foam of water hardened.
The leech-child and Awa are not counted, and the two go back up to heaven
The gods of heaven said to Izanaki and Izanami: "There is a land of reed plains and abundant rice ears, rich for fifteen hundred autumns. Go down and put it in order." Then they handed over the jewelled halberd of heaven.
The two stood on the floating bridge of heaven and thrust the halberd down, feeling for land. They stirred the blue sea and drew the halberd up, and the brine that dripped from its point hardened and became an island. It is called Onogoro-shima.
The two came down and lived on that island. They raised a hall eight fathoms across, and they set up a pillar of heaven.
The man asked the woman, "How is your body formed?" She answered, "In my body there is one place that is the source of the female." He said, "In my body there is also a place that is the source of the male. I want to join the source-place of my body to the source-place of yours."
So the man went round the pillar of the land, and the woman went round it as well. When they met, the woman spoke first: "How glad I am. I have met a fine man." The man answered after her: "How glad I am. I have met a fine woman."
So they became husband and wife. First she bore the leech-child. They put it at once into a boat of reeds and let it drift away. Next she bore the island of Awa, and this too they did not count among their children.
So they went back up to heaven and reported what had happened. The gods of heaven divined it by the great divination and told them: "It is because the woman's words came first. Go down again." Then they fixed the day and the hour by divination and sent them down.
The two went round the pillar once more, the man from the left and the woman from the right. When they met, the man spoke first: "How glad I am. I have met a fine woman." The woman answered after him: "How glad I am. I have met a fine man."
After that they lived together in one hall and had children. The first was called Oyamato-no-Toyoakitsu-shima. Next Awaji-shima. Next Iyo-no-Futana-shima. Next Tsukushi-shima. Next Oki-no-Mitsugo-shima, the island of three children. Next Sado-shima. Next Koshi-shima. Next Kibi-no-ko-shima.
For this reason it is called Oyashima-guni, the land of the eight great islands.
Standing in the mist of heaven, they find Onogoro
Izanaki and Izanami stood in the mist of heaven and said, "We want to get a land."
So they pointed the jewelled spear of heaven downward and felt about with it, and they found the island of Onogoro. They drew the spear back up and said with joy, "Good. There is a land."
Seated in the plain of high heaven, they draw the island out with the spear
Izanaki and Izanami sat in the plain of high heaven and said, "There must surely be a land."
So with the jewelled spear of heaven they drew it out and made the island of Onogoro.
Seeing something like floating fat, they make an island
Izanaki and Izanami said to each other, "There is something like fat floating there. Surely there is a land inside it."
So they felt about with the jewelled spear of heaven and made one island. It is called Onogoro-shima.
They learn how to couple from a wagtail
The woman spoke first: "How glad I am. I have met a fine man."
Because the woman had spoken first, this was held to be a bad sign, and they went round again. Then the man spoke first: "How glad I am. I have met a fine woman."
After that they wanted to couple, but they did not know how it was done.
Just then a wagtail flew down and shook its head and its tail. The two watched it and learned from it, and so they came to know how to couple.
Both Awaji and Awa serve as the afterbirth
The two joined and became husband and wife.
First the islands of Awaji and Awa served together as the afterbirth, and then she bore Oyamato-no-Toyoakitsu-shima. Next Iyo-shima. Next Tsukushi-shima. Next Oki-shima and Sado-shima together, as twins. Next Koshi-shima. Next Oshima. Next Ko-shima.
Iki and Tsushima are counted among the islands born
First she bore Awaji-shima. Next Oyamato-no-Toyoakitsu-shima. Next Iyo-no-Futana-shima. Next Oki-shima. Next Sado-shima. Next Tsukushi-shima. Next Iki-shima. Next Tsushima.
Onogoro is the afterbirth, and Awaji is the first child
The island of Onogoro served as the afterbirth, and then she bore Awaji-shima. Next Oyamato-no-Toyoakitsu-shima. Next Iyo-no-Futana-shima. Next Tsukushi-shima. Next Kibi-no-ko-shima. Next Oki-shima and Sado-shima together, as twins. Next Koshi-shima.
Awa is counted as a child, and Oki is called the island of three children
The island of Awaji served as the afterbirth, and then she bore Oyamato-no-Toyoakitsu-shima. Next Awa-shima. Next Iyo-no-Futana-shima. Next Oki-no-Mitsugo-shima, the island of three children. Next Sado-shima. Next Tsukushi-shima. Next Kibi-no-ko-shima. Next Oshima.
She takes his hand, and after Awaji comes the leech-child
The woman spoke first: "How glad I am. I have met a fine man."
She took the man's hand there and then, and at last they became husband and wife.
She bore Awaji-shima, and next the leech-child.
They bear the sun and the moon and drive out Susanoo
Next they bore the sea, next the rivers, next the mountains. Next they bore Kukunochi, the ancestor of trees, and next Kayanohime, the ancestor of grasses. Kayanohime is also called Nozuchi.
After that Izanaki and Izanami took counsel together and said: We have already borne the great eight islands and the mountains, rivers, grasses and trees. Why should we not bear one who will rule all under heaven?
So the two of them together bore the sun, whose name is Amaterasu, here called Ohirume-no-muchi. One writing calls her Amaterasu-ohokami, another Amaterasu-ohirume-no-mikoto. This child shone so brightly that her light reached the four quarters and everything above and below. The two were glad and said: We have many children, but none as marvelous as this one. She should not be kept long in this land. Let us send her up to heaven at once and give her the affairs of heaven. At that time heaven and earth were not yet far apart, so they sent her up by the pillar of heaven.
Next they bore the moon. One writing calls him Tsukuyumi-no-mikoto, another Tsukuyomi-no-mikoto, another Tsukuyomi-no-mikoto written with different characters. His light was second only to the sun's, so that he might rule beside the sun they sent him up to heaven as well.
Next they bore the leech-child. Even at three years old its legs would not hold it. So they set it in the rock-camphor boat of heaven and let the wind carry it away.
Next they bore Susanoo. One writing calls him Kamu-susanoo-no-mikoto, another Haya-susanoo-no-mikoto. This god was bold and violent and did harm without hesitation. He also made a practice of weeping and howling. Because of this many of the people of the land died young, and green mountains turned into withered mountains. So his father and mother commanded him: You are utterly without right conduct. You cannot be set over the world. Go far away, to the land of roots. And in the end they drove him out.
A variant in which the sun and moon come out of mirrors
Izanaki said: I mean to bear a fine child who will rule all under heaven. He took a mirror of white copper in his left hand, and a god came into being out of it. This is Amaterasu, here called Ohirume-no-mikoto. He took a mirror of white copper in his right hand, and a god came into being out of it. This is Tsukuyomi, here called Tsukuyumi-no-mikoto. Then, as he turned his head and looked aside, a god came into being from that. This is Susanoo.
Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi were both bright and lovely by nature, and so they were set to shine over heaven and earth. Susanoo by nature liked to do injury, and so he was sent down to rule the land of roots.
Why the leech-child could not stand, and death by the fire god
After the sun and the moon had been born, next came the leech-child. Even at three years old its legs would not hold it. When Izanaki and Izanami first went around the pillar of heaven, the female spoke the words of gladness first. This already went against the order of yin and yang, and that is why the leech-child was born now.
Next they bore Susanoo. This god was bad by nature and was forever weeping and raging. Many of the people of the land died, and the green mountains withered. So his father and mother commanded him: If we let you rule this land, you would certainly do much harm and injury. Therefore you shall govern the land of roots, far away.
Next they bore the bird rock-camphor boat. They set the leech-child in this boat at once and let the current carry it off.
Next they bore the fire god Kagutsuchi. At this Izanami was burned by Kagutsuchi and died. As she was dying, lying there she bore the earth god Haniyamahime and the water god Mizuhanome. Then Kagutsuchi took Haniyamahime to wife, and they had Wakumusuhi. On this god's head grew silkworms and mulberry, and in the navel grew the five grains.
A variant in which she also bears the heavenly gourd-vine as she dies
When Izanami bore the fire god Honomusuhi, she was burned by her child and passed away. As she was about to pass away, she bore the water god Mizuhanome and the earth god Haniyamahime, and she also bore the heavenly gourd-vine.
A variant in which gods come from her vomit and her waste
When Izanami bore the fire god Kagutsuchi, she writhed in the heat of it. Because of this she vomited, and the vomit became a god whose name is Kanayamahiko. Next she passed water, and that too became a god whose name is Mizuhanome. Next she passed excrement, and that too became a god whose name is Haniyamahime.
Her grave at Arima in Kumano and the festival of flowers
When Izanami bore the fire god she was burned and passed away. She was buried at the village of Arima in Kumano in the province of Kii. When the people of that place worship this god's spirit, in the season of flowers they worship her with flowers, and they also use drums and flutes and banners and flags, and worship her with singing and dancing.
The longest variant, from the wind god to the three noble children
Izanaki and Izanami together bore the great eight islands. After that Izanaki said: The land I have borne has nothing over it but morning mist. The breath with which he blew it away became a god whose name is Shinatobe, also called Shinatsuhiko. This is the god of wind. The child he bore when he was hungry is called Ukanomitama. He also bore the gods of the sea, called Watatsumi; the gods of the mountains, called Yamatsumi; the gods of the river mouths, called Hayaakitsuhi; the gods of the trees, called Kukunochi; and the god of the soil, called Haniyasu. After that he bore all things.
When the fire god Kagutsuchi was born, his mother Izanami was burned and passed away. Izanaki said bitterly: Am I to lose my beloved wife in exchange for a single child? He crawled about her head and crawled about her feet, weeping and shedding tears. His tears fell and became a god, the one who lives under the tree on Une hill, whose name is Nakisawame.
Then he drew the ten-span sword at his belt and cut Kagutsuchi into three pieces, and each became a god. The blood that dripped from the blade of the sword became the five hundred rocks that lie by the river Yasu of heaven. This is the ancestor of Futsunushi. The blood that dripped from the guard of the sword spurted out and became gods, named Mikahayahi and then Hinohayahi. That Mikahayahi is the ancestor of Takemikazuchi. Another account gives Mikahayahi, then Hinohayahi, then Takemikazuchi. The blood that dripped from the point of the sword spurted out and became gods, named Iwasaku, then Nesaku, then Iwatsutsunoo. Another account gives Iwatsutsunoo, then Iwatsutsunome. The blood that dripped from the head of the sword spurted out and became gods, named Kuraokami, then Kurayamatsumi, then Kuramitsuha.
After that Izanaki followed Izanami into Yomi, caught up with her, and they talked together. Then Izanami said: My husband, why have you come so late? I have already eaten of the cooking hearth of Yomi. Even so, I am about to lie down. Please do not look at me. Izanaki did not listen. He quietly took his many-toothed comb, broke off one of its thick end teeth, lit it as a torch and looked. Her body was running with pus, and maggots swarmed over it. People today avoid lighting a single flame at night and avoid throwing down a comb at night, and this is where that comes from.
Izanaki was terrified and said: I have come without meaning to into a foul and defiled land. He turned and ran. Then Izanami said bitterly: Why did you break your word and shame me? She sent eight ugly women of Yomi to catch him and hold him back. Another account calls them the Yomi hunting-women. Izanaki drew his sword and fled, swinging it behind him. He threw down his black headdress and it turned into grapes. The women saw them, picked them and ate them, and when they had finished eating they came on again. He threw down his comb and it turned into bamboo shoots. The women picked those and ate them too, and when they had finished eating they came on again. After that Izanami came after him herself.
By then Izanaki had reached the flat pass of Yomi. Another account says that he passed water against a great tree and it turned into a wide river, and while the Yomi hunting-women were crossing that water he had already reached the flat pass of Yomi.
So he blocked the road of the pass with a rock that takes a thousand people to move, stood facing Izanami, and at last spoke the words that ended their marriage. Then Izanami said: My beloved husband, if you say this, I will strangle a thousand of the people of the land you rule every day. Izanaki answered: My beloved wife, if you say this, I will have fifteen hundred born every day. Then he said: Come no further than this. He threw down his staff, and it is called Funado. He threw down his sash, and it is called Nagachiwa. He threw down his robe, and it is called Wazurai. He threw down his trousers, and it is called Akigui. He threw down his shoes, and it is called Chishiki.
As for the flat pass of Yomi, some say that there is no separate place of that name, and that it means only the moment when the breath fails at death. The rock that blocked it is called Yomidoshagi-no-okami, and also Chigaeshi-no-okami.
After he returned Izanaki said in regret: I went to a foul and defiled place. I want to wash the filth off my body. So he went to the plain of hardy trees at Odo by the orange grove in Himuka in Tsukushi and performed a cleansing there. Meaning to rinse away the filth of his body, he said: The upper reach runs too fast, the lower reach is too weak. So he washed in the middle reach. The god born from this is Yasomagatsuhi. Next, when he meant to set right what had been made crooked, there were born Kamunaobi and then Onaobi.
He also sank down and washed at the bottom of the sea, and the gods born from this are Sokotsuwatatsumi and then Sokotsutsunoo no Mikoto. He dived and washed in the middle of the tide, and the gods born from this are Nakatsuwatatsumi and then Nakatsutsunoo no Mikoto. He floated and washed on the surface of the tide, and the gods born from this are Uwatsuwatatsumi and then Uwatsutsunoo no Mikoto. Nine gods in all. Sokotsutsunoo, Nakatsutsunoo and Uwatsutsunoo are the great gods of Sumiyoshi. Sokotsuwatatsumi, Nakatsuwatatsumi and Uwatsuwatatsumi are the gods worshipped by the Azumi no Muraji.
After that he washed his left eye, and the god born from this is Amaterasu. He washed his right eye, and the god born from this is Tsukuyomi. He washed his nose, and the god born from this is Susanoo. Three gods in all.
Then Izanaki gave his three children their charges: Amaterasu is to rule the plain of high heaven. Tsukuyomi is to rule the eight hundred folds of the tide on the blue sea plain. Susanoo is to rule all under heaven.
By this time Susanoo was grown, with a beard eight hands long. Even so he did not rule the world, but wept and howled and nursed his resentment. Izanaki asked him: Why do you always weep like this? He answered: I want to follow my mother to the land of roots. I weep for that alone. Izanaki hated this and said: Go where you please. And he drove him out.
A variant in which the fire god is cut into three
Izanaki drew his sword and cut Kagutsuchi into three pieces. One piece became the thunder god, one became Ōyamatsumi, and one became Takaokami.
It is also said that when he cut Kagutsuchi the blood spurted out and stained the five hundred rocks that lay in the river of the eighty currents of heaven. From this gods came into being: Iwasaku, then Nesaku, then Iwatsutsunoo, then Iwatsutsunome.
A variant in which he is cut into five and becomes five mountain gods
Izanaki cut Kagutsuchi into five pieces, and each became one of five mountain gods. The first, the head, became Ōyamatsumi. The second, the trunk, became Nakayamatsumi. The third, the hands, became Hayamatsumi. The fourth, the loins, became Masakayamatsumi. The fifth, the feet, became Shigiyamatsumi.
At this the blood of the cutting spurted and scattered and stained the stones and pebbles and trees and grasses. This is why grass and trees and sand and stone hold fire in themselves.
A variant in which he sees eight thunders at the place of the wake
Izanaki wished to see his wife and sister, so he went to the place where her body lay before burial. Izanami was just as she had been in life; she came out to meet him and they talked together. Then she said to him: My husband, please do not look at me. As soon as she had said it she was suddenly no longer to be seen. It was dark there.
Izanaki lit a single flame and looked. Izanami's body was swollen and huge, and on it were eight thunders. Izanaki was frightened and ran back. The thunders all rose up and came after him.
By the roadside stood a large peach tree. Izanaki hid under it, took its fruit and threw it at the thunders, and they all drew back and fled. This is why the peach is used to keep off demons.
Then Izanaki threw down his staff and said: From here on the thunders cannot come. This is called Funado. Its older name is Kunado-no-sae-no-kami.
The eight thunders are these: on her head, the great thunder; on her breast, the fire thunder; on her belly, the earth thunder; on her back, the young thunder; on her buttocks, the black thunder; on her hand, the mountain thunder; on her foot, the moor thunder; on her genitals, the splitting thunder.
A variant with gods from his spittle and Kukurihime as go-between
Izanaki followed Izanami to where she was and spoke to her: I have come because I grieve for you. She answered: My kinsman, do not look at me. Izanaki did not obey and looked all the same. So Izanami was ashamed and said bitterly: You have seen how I am. Now I will see how you are. At this Izanaki too was ashamed.
He was about to go out and return, but he did not go back in silence. He swore, saying: I part from my kin. And he said: I will not be beaten by my kin. The god born from the spittle he spat then is Hayatamanoo. Next, the god born from his sweeping clean is Yomotsukotosakanoo. Two gods in all.
When he quarrelled with his wife and sister at the flat pass of Yomi, Izanaki said: That I grieved for my kin at first, and longed for her, was weakness in me.
Then the guardian of the road of Yomi brought word: There is a message. It is this. I have already borne a land together with you. Why should I seek to bear more? I shall stay in this land. I cannot leave it with you.
At this Kukurihime also had something to say. Izanaki heard it and approved of it, and then he departed.
But to have seen the land of Yomi with his own eyes was an ill thing. So, meaning to wash off that defilement, he went to look at the strait of Awa and the strait of Hayasuhina. But the tide ran too fast at both of those straits. So he turned back to the small strait at the orange grove and cleansed himself there.
Going into the water he blew and bore Iwatsuchi. Coming out of the water he blew and bore Onaobi. Going in again he blew and bore Sokotsuchi. Coming out of the water he blew and bore Oayatsuhi. Going in again he blew and bore Akatsuchi. Coming out of the water he blew and bore all the gods of the land and of the sea plain.
Tsukuyomi kills Ukemochi and the grains come from her body
Amaterasu was in heaven and said: I hear there is a god called Ukemochi in the central land of reed plains. Tsukuyomi, go down and see.
Tsukuyomi took the charge, went down and came to Ukemochi. Ukemochi turned her head toward the land, and boiled rice came out of her mouth. She turned toward the sea, and fish large and small came out of her mouth. She turned toward the mountains, and animals rough-haired and soft-haired came out of her mouth. She set out all of these, piled them high on tables, and offered them.
At this Tsukuyomi flushed with anger and said: This is filthy and base. How dare you feed me what you have spat out of your mouth? He drew his sword and struck Ukemochi dead.
Afterward he reported this to Amaterasu. Amaterasu was furious and said: You are an evil god. I do not wish to see you again. From then on she lived apart from Tsukuyomi, separated by one day and one night.
After that Amaterasu sent Amenokumahito down to look. Ukemochi was already dead. But from the top of her body oxen and horses had been born; on her forehead millet had grown; on her eyebrows silkworms had grown; in her eyes barnyard grass had grown; in her belly rice had grown; and in her genitals wheat and soybeans and red beans had grown. Amenokumahito gathered all of these and brought them up.
Amaterasu was glad and said: These things are what the people who live in this world must eat to stay alive. So she made the millet, the barnyard grass, the wheat and the beans seed for dry fields, and the rice seed for wet fields. She also appointed the village lords of heaven for this purpose. Then she planted that rice seed for the first time in the narrow fields of heaven and the long fields. That autumn the drooping ears were eight hands long and very fine to see.
Amaterasu also took cocoons into her mouth and was able to draw thread from them. The way of raising silkworms began here.
The ascent to heaven and the oath: three goddesses and five gods
After this Susanoo said, "I will now go to the root-land, as I have been told. But first let me go up for a while to the high plain of heaven, see my elder sister, and then withdraw for good." Leave was granted, and he went up to heaven.
At that the sea roared and the hills and mountains groaned. Amaterasu had long known how fierce her younger brother's nature was, and when she heard the noise she was startled, and her face changed. She said, "My brother does not come with good intent. Surely he means to take my land from me. Our father and mother have already given each of their children a domain to rule. Why should he abandon the land that is his to go to and come prying into this one?"
So she undid her hair and bound it into loops, tied her skirt into trousers, and wound about her hair-loops, her hair-ornament and her arms the five hundred jewels of the eight-span string. On her back she slung a quiver of a thousand arrows and a quiver of five hundred, and on her forearm she fastened the loud elbow-guard. She brandished the notch of her bow, gripped the hilt of her sword, stamped the hard ground of the courtyard until she sank in to her thighs and scattered the earth like light snow, and shouted a fierce challenge: "Why have you come?"
Susanoo answered, "I have never had an evil heart. It is only that our father and mother have already told me to go to the root-land. I thought I could not go without seeing my elder sister, so I pushed through the clouds and mists and came all this way. I did not expect my sister to meet me with such an angry face."
Amaterasu asked again, "If that is so, by what will you make it plain that your heart is red and clean?"
He answered, "Let me swear an oath together with you. In the course of the oath children will certainly be born. If the children I bear are female, take it that my heart is foul. If they are male, take it that my heart is clean."
So Amaterasu asked for Susanoo's ten-span sword, broke it into three pieces, rinsed them in the true well of heaven, and chewed them with a crunching sound. From the fine mist of the breath she blew away a god was born, named Tagorihime. Next Tagitsuhime, next Ichikishimahime — three goddesses in all.
Then Susanoo asked for the five hundred jewels of the eight-span string that Amaterasu had wound about her hair-loops, her hair-ornament and her arms. He rinsed them in the true well of heaven and chewed them with a crunching sound. From the fine mist of the breath he blew away a god was born, named Ame-no-Oshihomimi. Next Ame-no-Hohi, ancestor of the Izumo no Omi and the Haji no Muraji. Next Amatsuhikone, ancestor of the Ōshikōchi no Atai and the Yamashiro no Atai. Next Ikutsuhikone, next Kumano-no-Kusubi — five male gods in all.
Then Amaterasu said, "If one traces the root of the things, the five hundred jewels of the eight-span string were mine. Therefore those five male gods are all my children." So she took them and reared them as her own. She said also, "The ten-span sword was Susanoo's. Therefore these three goddesses are all your children." So she gave them to Susanoo. These are the gods worshipped by the Munakata no Kimi of Tsukushi.
Three swords of the sun goddess bring forth the three goddesses
Amaterasu had long known that Susanoo had a fierce temper that overbore others, and as soon as he came up she said, "My brother does not come with good intent. Surely he means to take my plain of heaven."
So she put on a man's armour. At her waist she wore a ten-span sword, a nine-span sword and an eight-span sword; on her back she slung a quiver; on her forearm she fastened the loud elbow-guard; and taking bow and arrows in her hands she went out herself to meet him and hold him off.
Susanoo said, "I have never had an evil heart. I only wished to see my elder sister, and have come for a short while."
So Amaterasu stood facing him and swore, saying, "If your heart is bright and clean and you have no thought of overbearing and seizing, the children you bear will certainly be male."
When she had spoken, she first ate the ten-span sword she wore and bore a child, named Okitsushimahime. She ate the nine-span sword and bore a child, named Tagitsuhime. She ate the eight-span sword and bore a child, named Tagorihime — three goddesses in all.
Then Susanoo took the five hundred jewels of the string that hung at his neck, rinsed them in the still well of heaven — also called the coming-and-going true well — and ate them. He bore a child named Ame-no-Oshihomimi. Next Amatsuhikone, next Ikutsuhikone, next Ame-no-Hohi, next Kumano-no-Oshihomi — five male gods in all. In this way Susanoo obtained the proof of victory.
Then Amaterasu, knowing that Susanoo truly had no evil intent, sent the three goddesses she had borne down to the island of Tsukushi, and instructed them, saying, "You three, go down and dwell in the middle of the sea road. Help the grandchild of heaven, and be worshipped by the grandchild of heaven."
Hakarutama presents the jewels, and sword and jewels are exchanged
When Susanoo was about to go up to heaven there was a god named Hakarutama. This god came out to meet him and presented him with the auspicious curved jewels of the eight-span string. So Susanoo carried those jewels with him and reached heaven.
Amaterasu suspected that her brother had an evil heart, raised troops and questioned him. Susanoo answered, "The reason I have come is that I truly wished to see my elder sister. I also wished to present these rare treasures, the auspicious curved jewels of the eight-span string. I have no other purpose at all."
Amaterasu asked again, "By what shall I prove whether your words are false or true?" He answered, "Let my sister and me swear an oath together. In the course of the oath, if a female is born it shall mean a black heart, and if a male is born, a red heart."
So they dug the true well of heaven in three places and stood facing each other. Then Amaterasu said to Susanoo, "I will now give you the sword I wear. Give me the curved jewels of the eight-span string that you hold." Having agreed on this, they exchanged them.
Then Amaterasu floated the curved jewels of the eight-span string on the true well of heaven, bit off the end of the jewels, and from the breath she blew out a god took shape, named Ichikishimahime. She is the one who dwells in the far offing. She bit off the middle of the jewels, and from the breath she blew out a god took shape, named Tagorihime. She is the one who dwells in the middle offing. She bit off the tail of the jewels, and from the breath she blew out a god took shape, named Tagitsuhime. She is the one who dwells by the shore. Three goddesses in all.
Then Susanoo floated the sword he held on the true well of heaven, bit off the tip of the sword, and from the breath he blew out a god took shape, named Ame-no-Hohi. Next Ame-no-Oshihomimi, next Amatsuhikone, next Ikutsuhikone, next Kumano-no-Kusubi — five male gods in all.
The oath across the river of heaven, and six male gods
Amaterasu and Susanoo faced each other across the tranquil river of heaven and swore, saying, "If you have no treacherous heart, the children you bear will certainly be male. If males are born, I will take them as my children and let them rule the plain of heaven."
So Amaterasu first ate her ten-span sword and bore a child, Okitsushimahime, also named Ichikishimahime. She ate the nine-span sword and bore a child, Tagitsuhime. She ate the eight-span sword and bore a child, Tagirihime.
Then Susanoo unwound, with a rattling sound, the string of the five hundred jewels wrapped about his left hair-loop; the jewels rang clear. He rinsed them, floating them on the still well of heaven. He bit the end of the jewels and set it on his left palm, and bore a child, Ame-no-Oshihomimi. He bit the right-hand jewels and set them on his right palm, and bore a child, Ame-no-Hohi — the distant ancestor of the Izumo no Omi, the rulers of Musashi, and the Haji no Muraji. Next Amatsuhikone, distant ancestor of the rulers of Ibaraki and the Nukatabe no Muraji. Next Ikumetsuhikone, next Hinohayahi, next Kumano-no-Ōsumi — six male gods in all.
Then Susanoo said to Amaterasu, "The reason I came up again is that the gods have assigned me to the root-land, and I am about to go there. If I did not see my elder sister I could not bear to part from her at the end. So it is with a truly clean heart that I have come up once more. Now that I have paid my respects, I will follow the will of the gods and go from here for good to the root-land. I ask that you look down upon the land of heaven and rule it in peace. And the children I have borne with a clean heart, these too I present to you."
Having said this, he went back down.

After this Susanoo's conduct was utterly lawless. How so? Amaterasu had taken the narrow paddy of heaven and the long paddy as her own fields, and in spring Susanoo sowed seed a second time over hers and broke down their ridges. In autumn he let loose the dappled colt of heaven and made it lie down in the fields. When Amaterasu was holding the festival of first fruits, he secretly voided excrement in the new hall. And when he saw Amaterasu weaving sacred garments in the weaving hall, he flayed the dappled colt of heaven, broke a hole in the roof tiles, and threw it inside.
At this Amaterasu started in alarm and wounded herself with the shuttle. In her anger she went into the rock cave of heaven, shut the rock door, and hid herself there. So all within the four quarters was in constant darkness, and no one could tell night from day.
Then the eighty myriad gods gathered on the bank of the tranquil river of heaven and considered how they might pray. Omoikane, planning deeply and looking far ahead, gathered the long-crowing birds of the everlasting land and made them crow to one another. He stationed Ame-no-Tajikarao beside the rock door. And Ame-no-Koyane, distant ancestor of the Nakatomi no Muraji, and Futodama, distant ancestor of the Imbe, dug up the five hundred sacred trees of the fragrant hill of heaven. On the upper branches they hung the five hundred jewels of the eight-span string; on the middle branches the eight-hand mirror — one account calls it the clear-water mirror; on the lower branches blue offerings and white offerings. Together they made their prayer.
And Ame-no-Uzume, distant ancestor of the Sarume no Kimi, held a spear bound with eulalia grass, stood before the door of the rock cave, and skilfully played the part of a performer.
Amaterasu heard this and said, "Shut in the cave as I have been these days, I supposed the central land of the reed plains must be in long night. Why then does Ame-no-Uzume make merry like this?" She opened the rock door a little with her hand and looked out. Then Ame-no-Tajikarao took her hand and drew her out.
The god of the Nakatomi and the god of the Imbe stretched a bounding rope across and asked, "Do not go back in again."
After that the gods laid the blame on Susanoo and imposed on him a thousand tables of goods, and pressed him hard for them, even to plucking out his hair to expiate his offence. Another account says that his finger-nails and toe-nails were plucked out in expiation. And in the end Susanoo was driven down.
Waka-hirume is killed by the shuttle
After this, Waka-hirume was in the weaving hall weaving a sacred garment. Susanoo saw her, flayed a dappled colt backwards, and threw it into the hall. Waka-hirume started, fell from the loom, wounded her body with the shuttle she held, and died.
So Amaterasu said to Susanoo, "You still have a black heart. I do not wish to see you." She went into the rock cave of heaven and shut the rock door behind her.
Then all under heaven was in constant darkness, and there was no longer any difference between day and night. So the eighty myriad gods were gathered at the high market of heaven and were asked what to do. There was one called Omoikane, a child of Takamimusuhi, who had the wisdom of deliberation. He considered and said, "We should plan and make an image of that god, and pray to call her back."
So Ishikoridome was made the smith, and metal was taken from the fragrant hill of heaven to make a sun-spear. A true deer was also flayed whole to make heavenly bellows. The god made with these is the sun-front god who dwells in the land of Kii.
The mirror made by Ame-no-Nukado becomes the great god of Ise
Amaterasu had the hedged paddy of heaven as her own field. In spring Susanoo filled in its channels and broke down its ridges, and in autumn, when the grain had ripened, he stretched marking ropes across it. And when she was in the weaving hall he flayed a dappled colt alive and put it inside. All these acts were lawless. Even so, out of a kinswoman's affection, Amaterasu neither resented nor hated him, but bore it all with an even heart.
When the time came for her festival of first fruits, Susanoo secretly left his own excrement under the seat in the new hall. Amaterasu, not knowing, sat straight down upon it, and her whole body was made unwell. In anger and resentment she went into the rock cave of heaven and shut its rock door.
Then the gods were troubled. They had Ame-no-Nukado, distant ancestor of the mirror-makers, make a mirror; Futodama, distant ancestor of the Imbe, make offerings; and Toyotama, distant ancestor of the jewel-makers, make jewels. They had Yamatsuchi gather five hundred sacred trees and eighty jewelled spindles, and Nozuchi gather five hundred reeds of the moor and eighty jewelled spindles. All these things were brought together.
Then Ame-no-Koyane, distant ancestor of the Nakatomi, blessed them with a sacred blessing. At that Amaterasu opened the rock door and came out.
At that moment the mirror that was put into the rock cave touched the door and took a small flaw. That flaw remains to this day. This is the great god venerated in secret at Ise.
Then they laid guilt on Susanoo and demanded from him the goods of purification. Hence there are the good things cast away from the hands and the ill things cast away from the feet. His spittle was made into white offerings and his mucus into blue offerings. With these the purification was completed, and at last he was driven out by the law of driving out a god.
The good fields of the sun goddess and the barren fields of Susanoo
After this, the sun goddess had three fields, called the tranquil field of heaven, the level field of heaven, and the village-joined field of heaven. All of them were good fields, and they took no harm even through long rain or drought.
Susanoo also had three fields, called the stake field of heaven, the river-hugging field of heaven, and the sharp-mouthed field of heaven. All of them were poor ground: when it rained they washed away, and when it was dry they scorched.
So Susanoo, envying and spoiling his sister's fields, in spring did away with the channels and the wooden conduits, filled in the ditches, broke down the ridges, and sowed seed a second time over hers. In autumn he set up marker stakes and made horses lie down in them. These wicked acts never once ceased. Even so the sun goddess did not grow angry, but always bore with him and forgave with an even heart. So it is told.
The eight-forked serpent is slain and the grass-cutting sword found
Then Susanoo came down from heaven and reached the upper waters of the Hi river in the land of Izumo. He heard the sound of weeping upstream, and following the sound he found an old man and an old woman with a young girl set between them, stroking her and weeping.
Susanoo asked, "Who are you? Why do you weep like this?"
They answered, "I am a god of this land, named Ashinazuchi. My wife is named Tenazuchi. This girl is our child, named Kushinadahime. We weep because I once had eight daughters, and each year they were swallowed by the eight-forked serpent. Now this child too is about to be swallowed, and there is no way for her to escape. That is why we grieve."
Susanoo said, "If that is so, will you give me your daughter?"
"We give her as you command."
So Susanoo at once turned Kushinadahime into a close-toothed comb and thrust it into his hair-loop. Then he had Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi brew eightfold-refined wine, and build a platform, and set out a vat on each of its sections, filled with the wine, and waited.
When the time came the great serpent did indeed appear. Its head and its tail each had eight forks. Its eyes were like red ground-cherries. Pines and oaks grew on its back, and it stretched across eight hills and eight valleys. Coming to the wine, it drank one vat with each head, and grew drunk and slept.
Then Susanoo drew the ten-span sword he wore and cut the serpent to pieces. When he reached the tail the blade of the sword was slightly notched. So he split the tail open and looked, and inside there was a sword. This is what is called the grass-cutting sword.
After that he went about looking for a place to be married, and at last came to the clean land of Izumo. He said, "My heart is clean and clear." There he built a palace.
One account says that at this time the fierce Susanoo sang:
Eight clouds rise up; in Izumo an eightfold fence, an eightfold fence I build to keep my wife within — that eightfold fence.
So the two were joined, and a child was born, Ōkuninushi.
Then he declared, "The heads of my child's household shall be Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi." He gave the two gods a name, calling them the ruling gods of the rice-field palace. And so Susanoo at last went to the root-land.
A variant that omits the serpent and gives only the lineage
Susanoo came down from heaven and reached the upper waters of the Hi river in Izumo. There he saw the daughter of Suganoyatsumimi, master of the rice-field palace, a girl named Inadahime. He set up a sacred bridal chamber, and a child was born, named Suga-no-Yuyamanushi-Minasaro-hiko-Yashimashino.
One account calls him Suga-no-Kakena-Sakakaru-hiko-Yashimade. Another calls him Suga-no-Yuyamanushi-Minasaro-hiko-Yashimano.
The fifth-generation descendant of this god is Ōkuninushi.
In Aki the serpent is killed to save a goddess with child
Then Susanoo came down to the upper waters of the Ye river in the land of Aki. A god was there named Ashinateshima, and his wife was named Suganoyatsumimi, master of the rice-field palace. She was with child.
The husband and wife grieved together and told Susanoo, "We have borne many children, but each time we bear one the eight-forked serpent comes and swallows it, and not one is left. Now she is about to give birth again, and we fear this one too will be swallowed. That is why we grieve."
Susanoo instructed them, "Brew eight jars of wine from many kinds of fruit. I will kill the serpent for you." The two gods set out the wine as he taught them.
When the time of birth came, the great serpent did indeed come to the door, about to swallow the child.
Susanoo said to the serpent, "You are a god to be feared. How should I not offer you a feast?" And he poured the wine of the eight jars into each of its mouths. The serpent drank the wine and slept. Susanoo drew his sword and cut it. When he cut the tail the blade was slightly notched. He split it and looked, and there was a sword inside the tail. This is called the grass-cutting sword. It is now at Ayuchi village in the land of Owari, the god in the keeping of the ritualists of Atsuta. The sword with which he cut the serpent is named Orochi-no-Aramasa. It is now at Isonokami.
After this, the child born to Suganoyatsumimi, Makamifuru-Kushinadahime, was moved to the upper waters of the Hi river in Izumo and reared there. Afterwards Susanoo took her as his consort. The sixth-generation descendant of the child born to them is Ōkuninushi.
The serpent killed with poisoned wine and the Karasabi sword
Susanoo wished to take Kushinadahime as his wife and asked for her. Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi answered, "Kill that serpent first; after that the marriage would be fitting. On each of that great serpent's heads a rock-pine grows, and on its two flanks there are mountains. It is truly to be feared. How do you mean to kill it?"
So Susanoo contrived to brew poisoned wine and gave it to the serpent to drink. The serpent grew drunk and slept. With the sword called Orochi-no-Karasabi, Susanoo cut off its heads and cut open its belly. When he cut the tail the blade of the sword was slightly notched. He split the tail and looked, and there was another sword inside, named the grass-cutting sword. This sword was once in Susanoo's keeping; it is now in the land of Owari.
The sword with which Susanoo cut the serpent is now in the keeping of the temple officers of Kibi. The mountain at the upper waters of the Hi river in Izumo is the place.
Susanoo comes down at Soshimori in Silla, and Isotakeru sows tree seeds
Susanoo's conduct was lawless, so the gods imposed on him a thousand tables of goods and at last drove him out.
Then Susanoo, leading his son Isotakeru, came down to the land of Silla and dwelt at a place called Soshimori. And he spoke up, saying, "I do not wish to live in this land."
So he made a boat of clay, boarded it and crossed eastward, and reached the peak of Torikami at the upper waters of the Hi river in the land of Izumo. There was a great serpent there that swallowed people. Susanoo cut that great serpent with the sword called Ame-no-Habakiri. When he cut the serpent's tail the blade was notched; he split it open and looked, and there was a divine sword inside the tail.
Susanoo said, "This is not a thing for me to use for myself." So he sent his fifth-generation descendant Ame-no-Fukine to present it up to heaven. This is what is now called the grass-cutting sword.
At first, when Isotakeru came down from heaven, he brought many tree seeds down with him. But he did not plant them in the land of Kara, and carried them all back. Then, beginning from Tsukushi, there was nowhere in the whole of the land of the eight great islands where he did not sow and plant them, and he made it all green mountains. For this reason Isotakeru is praised as a god of merit. He is the great god who dwells in the land of Kii.
Trees grow from Susanoo's body hair and their uses are fixed
Susanoo said, "In the islands of the land of Kara there is gold and silver. If the land ruled by my child had no floating treasure, that would not be good."
So he plucked out his beard and scattered it, and it became cedar. He plucked out the hair of his chest and scattered it, and it became cypress. The hair of his buttocks became umbrella pine, and the hair of his eyebrows became camphor.
Then he fixed their proper uses, saying, "Cedar and camphor, these two trees, are fit to be made into floating treasure. Cypress is fit for the timbers of fair palaces. Umbrella pine is fit for the things in which living people are to be laid in their last resting place. As for the many kinds of trees whose fruit is to be eaten, let them all be sown and grown."
At this time Susanoo's son was named Isotakeru, and his younger sisters were Ōyatsuhime and Tsumatsuhime. These three gods also distributed the tree seeds well, and brought them over to the land of Kii.
After that Susanoo dwelt on the peak of Kumanari, and at last entered the root-land.
Making the land with Sukunabikona, and the coming of Ōmononushi
Ōkuninushi is also named Ōmononushi, and is also called Ōnamuchi who made the land, and Ashihara-no-Shikoo, and Yachihoko, and Ōkunitama, and Utsushikunitama.
His children were 181 gods in all.
Once there was suddenly a human voice on the sea. He was startled and searched, but nothing at all could be seen. After a while a small man appeared. He had made a boat of the rind of a bittersweet vine and wore the feathers of a wren for clothing, and came floating on the tide.
Ōkuninushi took him and set him on his palm and played with him, whereupon he leapt up and bit his cheek. Wondering at his shape, Ōkuninushi sent a messenger to report to the gods of heaven.
Then Takamimusuhi heard of it and said, "The children I have borne are 1,500 in all. Of these, one child was the most wayward and would not obey my teaching. The one that slipped down between my fingers — that must surely be he. Take him kindly and rear him." This is Sukunabikona.
Ōkuninushi and Sukunabikona joined their strength and made their hearts one, and set the world in order. For the sake of living people and of livestock they fixed methods of healing sickness, and to drive off the harm done by birds, beasts and creeping things they fixed the methods of charms. Because of this, the people to this day all receive their blessing.
Once Ōkuninushi said to Sukunabikona, "Can the land we have made be said to be well made?" Sukunabikona answered, "In some parts it is made, and in some parts it is not."
After that Sukunabikona went to the cape of Kumano and at last departed for the everlasting land. Another account says that he came to the island of Awa and climbed a millet stalk, and was flicked away and reached the everlasting land.
Then Ōkuninushi said, "Now there is only myself to rule this land. Is there anyone who could rule the world together with me?"
At that a divine light shone over the sea, and something came floating up at once and said, "If I were not here, how could you have subdued this land? It is because I am here that you have been able to achieve this great work of building."
Ōkuninushi asked, "Then who are you?" It answered, "I am your lucky spirit and your wondrous spirit."
Ōkuninushi said, "Just so. Now I know that you are my lucky spirit and my wondrous spirit. Where do you wish to dwell now?" It answered, "I wish to dwell on Mount Mimoro in the land of Yamato."
So he built a shrine in that place and had it go and dwell there. This is the god of Ōmiwa. The children of this god are the Kamo no Kimi and the Ōmiwa no Kimi, and also Himetatara-Isuzuhime.
Another account says that Kotoshironushi turned into an eight-fathom bear-crocodile and visited Mishima-no-Mizokuihime — one account calls her Tamakushihime — and begot a child, Himetatara-Isuzuhime.
