The Mibu group was established to carry the name of the heir Izahowake.
The Tajihi group was established to carry the name of Mizuhawake.

The pond of Wani and the pond of Yosami were made.
The channel of Naniwa was dug and the water led out to the sea, and the channel of Obashi was dug.
The harbour of Suminoe was established.
The Smoke of the People's Hearths
The ruler climbed a high mountain, looked out over the land on every side, and said: "Nowhere in the land does smoke rise. The land is poor throughout. Therefore from now until three years have passed I remit all the people's taxes and labour."
So the great hall fell into ruin, and though the rain leaked in, no repairs were made. The leaking rain was caught in troughs, and those inside moved aside to the places where it did not leak.
Later he looked out over the land again, and smoke filled the land. Seeing that the people had grown rich, he laid taxes and labour on them once more.
So the people prospered and were not burdened by the labour.
For this his reign is praised, and it is called the reign of the sage ruler.
Kurohime and the Journey to Kibi
The empress Iwanohime was fiercely jealous. The women the ruler took could not so much as look inside the palace, and if anything happened the empress stamped her feet in jealousy.
The ruler heard that Kurohime, daughter of the Ama no Atae of Kibi, was beautiful, and he sent for her and took her; but she, fearing the empress's jealousy, fled back down to her own province. The ruler, watching from a high hall as her boat went out over the sea, sang:
Out on the offing
small boats go in a row;
kurozaya —
Masazuko, my love,
goes down to her own land.
When the empress heard this song she was greatly angered, and sent people to the great shore to put Kurohime off the boat and drive her away on foot.
Then the ruler, longing for Kurohime, deceived the empress, saying that he wished to see the island of Awaji. And when he had crossed to Awaji he looked far off and sang:
From the cape of Naniwa
where the light lies wide
I set out and stand,
and looking at my land I see
Awashima,
Onogoroshima,
the island of Ajimasa,
Saketsushima as well.
From that island he crossed on to the land of Kibi. Kurohime lodged him in a place among the mountain fields and set out a great feast for him. While she was plucking greens there to boil for it, the ruler came to the place where she was plucking and sang:
Even the greens
sown in the mountain field —
when with the one from Kibi
I pluck them together,
how good it is.
When the ruler went back up to the capital, Kurohime offered him a song:
Toward Yamato
the west wind blows up
and the clouds are parted;
though we be parted so,
shall I forget you?
And she sang again:
Toward Yamato,
whose husband is it who goes?
Like hidden water
creeping below, unseen,
whose husband is it who goes?
The Empress Throws the Leaves Away and Goes up to Yamashiro
While the empress had gone to the land of Ki to gather mitsunagashiwa leaves for a great feast, the ruler took Yata no Wakairatsume.
As the empress was coming home with her boat loaded full of the leaves, a labourer from Kojima in Kibi who served under the water officers, on his way home to his own province, met at the great crossing of Naniwa the boat of an attendant who had fallen behind, and told her: "The ruler has lately taken Yata no Wakairatsume, and plays with her day and night. It must be that the empress has not heard of it, and so travels quietly for pleasure." The attendant heard this, overtook the empress's boat, and reported it exactly as the labourer had told it.
The empress, bitterly angry, threw into the sea all the leaves she had loaded on the boat. For this the place is called Mitsu-no-saki.
She did not enter the palace, but turned her boat back, went up the channel against the current, and travelled up along the river into Yamashiro.
At that time she sang:
Tsuginefu —
up the river of Yamashiro,
up along the river,
as I go up,
on the river bank
there grows a sashibu,
a sashibu tree,
and under it there grows
a broad-leaved
sacred camellia:
bright as its blossom,
broad and full as its leaves —
such is my lord.
Going round through Yamashiro, she came to the entrance of the Nara hills and sang:
Tsuginefu —
up the river of Yamashiro,
up toward the palace,
as I go up,
aoniyoshi —
I pass Nara,
I pass Yamato with the hills for its shield,
and the land I long to see
is Takamiya in Kazuraki,
the place where my home is.
Having sung this she turned back, and for a time entered the house of Nurinomi, a man of Kara, at Tsutsuki.
Kuchiko in the Rain and the Insect That Changes Three Times
The ruler heard that the empress had gone up to Yamashiro, and sent a retainer named Toriyama to carry her a song:
To Yamashiro —
overtake her, Toriyama,
overtake her, overtake her,
and my beloved wife,
may you overtake and meet.
He sent Kuchiko, grandee of Wani, after her, and sang:
At Mimoro,
on that high fort,
the moor of Ōigo:
in the belly
of that Ōigo
lies the liver, and facing it
the heart — will you not think
even of my heart?
And he sang again:
Tsuginefu —
the women of Yamashiro
with wooden hoes
dug up radishes:
white as those roots,
your white arms —
had I never pillowed on them,
you might well say you do not know me.
When Kuchiko delivered these songs a heavy rain was falling. He did not take shelter from it: when he knelt at the front door of the hall the empress went out by the back door, and when he knelt at the back door she went out by the front. So he crept forward and knelt in the middle of the courtyard, and the water rose to his waist. He was wearing a blue-dyed robe tied with a red cord, and the water carried the red from the cord until all the blue turned red.
Kuchiko's younger sister Kuchihime was in the empress's service, and she sang:
At the palace of Tsutsuki
in Yamashiro,
he who kneels there
delivering his message, my brother —
he brings tears to my eyes.
When the empress asked what this meant, Kuchihime answered: "He is my elder brother, Kuchiko."
Then Kuchiko, his sister Kuchihime, and Nurinomi took counsel together and reported to the ruler: "The empress came here only because Nurinomi keeps a strange insect that changes three times — once it is a crawling insect, once a husk, once a flying bird — and she came to see this insect. She has no other thought."
When they said this, the ruler said, "Then I too find it strange, and will go to see it." He went up from the great palace and entered Nurinomi's house, and Nurinomi presented the three forms of the insect he kept to the empress. The ruler stood at the door of the hall where the empress was and sang:
Tsuginefu —
the women of Yamashiro
with wooden hoes
dug up radishes:
rustling like them,
because you spoke out so,
crossing over,
like trees that spread in leaf,
I have come in to you.
These six songs of the ruler and the empress are the returning songs of the shizu-uta.
The Songs to Yata no Wakairatsume
The ruler, loving Yata no Wakairatsume, sent her a song:
At Yata
the single sedge stem
bears no child;
will it stand there and go to waste?
A pity, that sedge field.
In words I call it
a sedge field —
a pity, that clean girl.
Yata no Wakairatsume answered with a song:
At Yata
the single sedge stem —
though it stand alone,
if my lord says it is well,
though it stand alone.
So the Yata group was established to carry the name of Yata no Wakairatsume.
The Deaths of Medori and Hayabusawake
The ruler wished to take his half-sister Medori, and sent her younger brother Hayabusawake as go-between. Medori said to Hayabusawake: "Because the empress is strong, Yata no Wakairatsume has not been received either. So I will not serve him. I will be your wife." And the two married. Hayabusawake did not report back.
The ruler went himself to where Medori was and stood on the threshold of her door. Medori was sitting at her loom, weaving cloth. The ruler sang:
Medori,
my lady,
the cloth you weave —
for whom is it?
Medori answered with a song:
For the mantle
of Hayabusawake,
who goes high.
The ruler understood her heart and went back to the palace.
When her husband Hayabusawake came, Medori sang:
The skylark climbs the sky.
Hayabusawake, you who go high —
take the wren.
Hearing this song, the ruler raised troops to kill them. Hayabusawake and Medori fled together and climbed Mount Kurahashi. Hayabusawake sang:
Hashitate —
Mount Kurahashi
being steep,
she cannot grip the rock
and takes my hand.
And he sang again:
Hashitate —
Mount Kurahashi
is steep,
but climbing with my love
it is not steep at all.
They fled on from there, and when they reached Soni in Uda the troops overtook them and killed them.
Medori's Armlet and Ōtate
Ōtate, chief of the Yamabe, took the jewelled armlet from Medori's arm and gave it to his own wife.
Later, when a great feast was to be held and the women of the several clans all came to court, the wife of Ōtate was wearing that armlet on her arm. The empress Iwanohime herself took oak leaves and served the strong drink to the women of the clans. She recognized the armlet, gave that woman no leaf of drink but had her taken away, and summoning her husband Ōtate she said: "Those two were without respect, and they were put away; that is not to be wondered at. But you are a servant, and while your mistress's body was still warm you stripped from her arm the jewelled armlet she wore, and gave it to your own wife."
And Ōtate was sentenced to death.
A Wild Goose Lays an Egg on Hime Island
When the ruler went to Hime Island for a great feast, a wild goose laid an egg on that island.
So he summoned Takeuchi no Sukune and asked him in song about the goose laying an egg:
Tamakiharu —
Uchi, my minister,
you are the one
who has lived longest in the world.
Soramitsu —
in the land of Yamato
have you heard of a wild goose laying an egg?
Takeuchi no Sukune answered in song:
High-shining
child of the sun,
rightly indeed
you ask me,
rightly indeed
you ask me.
I am the one
who has lived longest in the world,
yet soramitsu —
in the land of Yamato
that a wild goose lays an egg
I have never yet heard.
Then he was given the lute, and sang:
It must be that your child
will rule the realm at last,
and so the wild goose has laid an egg.
This is a katauta of the blessing songs.
The Ship Karano Made into a Lute
In this reign there stood a tall tree west of the river Tsuki. When the morning sun struck it, its shadow reached the island of Awaji; when the evening sun struck it, the shadow crossed Mount Takayasu.
This tree was cut down and made into a ship, and the ship was very swift. Its name was Karano. With this ship the cold spring water of Awaji was fetched morning and evening and offered as the ruler's water.
When the ship broke up, it was burned as firewood for making salt, and from the wood left unburned a lute was made, and its sound carried seven leagues.
Then someone sang:
Karano
was burned for salt,
and what was left of it
was made into a lute;
and when it is struck,
like the sea plants
standing and brushing
the reef in the middle
of the strait of Yura —
sayasaya.
This is a returning song of the shizu-uta.
Nintoku's Age and Tomb
This ruler lived to the age of eighty-three.
His tomb is at Mimihara in Mozu.
Emperor Richū and His Children
Emperor Richū (Izahowake no Mikoto) ruled the realm from the palace of Wakasakura at Ihare.
He married Kurohime, daughter of Ashida no Sukune, who was a son of Katsuragi no Sotsuhiko. Their children were Prince Ichinobe no Oshiha, then Prince Mima, then their younger sister Aomi no Iratsume, also called Ihitoyo no Iratsume. Three children.
The Palace Burns and the Emperor Flees
While Emperor Richū (Izahowake no Mikoto) was still at the palace of Naniha, he drank at the great harvest rite, grew drunk, and fell asleep. His younger brother Sumi-no-e no Nakatsu no Ō then set fire to the palace.
Achi no Atahe, ancestor of the Atahe of Aya in Yamato, carried the emperor off in secret, set him on a horse, and fled with him toward Yamato.
When they reached the moor of Tajihi the emperor woke and asked where he was. Achi no Atahe said: "Sumi-no-e no Nakatsu no Ō has set fire to the palace, so I am taking you away to Yamato." Then the emperor sang:
Had I known
that I would sleep on the moor of Tajihi,
I would have brought
my standing mats with me —
had I known that I would sleep here.
When they came to the slope of Hanifu and saw the palace of Naniha burning, he sang again:
Standing on the slope of Hanifu, I look:
houses burning in a shimmer of flame —
it is near my wife's house.
At the mountain entrance of Ōsaka they met a woman, who said: "Many men with weapons are blocking this mountain. Go round instead by the Tagima road." Then the emperor sang:
The girl
I met at Ōsaka —
when I asked her the road,
she did not tell me the straight way;
she told me the Tagima road.
So he went up and entered the shrine at Isonokami.
The Rebel Brother and Sobakari Are Killed
Then his younger brother, Emperor Hanzei (Mizuhawake no Mikoto), came and sought an audience.
The emperor said: "I suspect that you are of one heart with Sumi-no-e no Nakatsu no Ō, so I will not speak with you."
Hanzei answered: "I have no foul heart. I am not of one heart with Sumi-no-e no Nakatsu no Ō."
The emperor said: "Then go back down now, kill Sumi-no-e no Nakatsu no Ō, and come up again. Then I will certainly meet you."
So Hanzei went straight back down to Naniha and deceived Sobakari, a Hayato who served the king in close attendance, saying: "If you kill this king for me, I will reward you richly, make you chief minister, and we shall govern the realm."
Sobakari agreed, waited until the king went into the privy, and stabbed him to death with a spear.
Hanzei then set out for Yamato with Sobakari. Reaching the mountain entrance of Ōsaka he thought: "Sobakari has done great service for me, but he has killed his own lord. That is not right. Yet if I do not repay his service I shall be called faithless, and if I keep my promise I must fear his heart. So I will repay the service and destroy the man."
He said to Sobakari: "Today we shall stay here. First I will grant you the rank of chief minister, and tomorrow we shall go up."
He halted at the mountain entrance, built a temporary palace, held a feast, granted him the rank of chief minister, and had the officials bow to him. Sobakari rejoiced, thinking his wish fulfilled.
Hanzei said: "Today I will drink from the same cup as the chief minister."
When they drank together, the liquor was poured into a bowl so large that it hid the drinker's face. The prince drank first and the chief minister after. As the chief minister drank, the great bowl covered his face. Hanzei drew the sword he had laid beneath the mat and cut off his head.
The next day he went up. That place is called Chikatsu-Asuka.
When he came up into Yamato he said: "Today I will stay here and purify myself, and tomorrow I will go out and worship at the shrine." That place is called Tōtsu-Asuka.
Then he went out to the shrine at Isonokami and reported to the emperor: "The matter is finished, and I have come back up." The emperor called him in and talked with him.
Offices and Clans Established

Emperor Ingyō and His Nine Children
Emperor Ingyō (Wo-asazuma-wakugo no Sukune no Mikoto) ruled the realm from the palace of Tōtsu-Asuka.
He married Osaka no Ōnakatsuhime no Mikoto, younger sister of Prince Ohodo. Their children were:
Prince Karu of Kinashi,
then Nagata no Ōiratsume,
then Prince Kurohiko of Sakahi,
then Emperor Ankō (Anaho no Mikoto),
then Karu no Ōiratsume, also called Sotōshi no Iratsume — so named because the light of her body shone out through her clothes —
then Prince Shirohiko of Yatsuri,
then Emperor Yūryaku (Ōhatsuse no Mikoto),
then Tachibana no Ōiratsume,
then Sakami no Iratsume. Nine children.
Of these, Emperor Ankō and Emperor Yūryaku governed the realm.
A Physician from Silla Cures the Emperor
Emperor Ingyō (Wo-asazuma-wakugo no Sukune no Mikoto) at first declined the throne, saying: "I have one long illness, and cannot govern the realm." But the empress and the magnates pressed him strongly, and in the end he governed the realm.
At that time the ruler of Silla sent eighty-one ships of tribute. The head of the tribute mission was named Komuhachimu Kamukimu, and he knew the way of medicine deeply. So he cured the emperor's illness.
The Ordeal of Boiling Water and the Names
The emperor was troubled that the family names and clan names of the realm were in disorder, so he set out jars of boiling water at the cape of the Eighty Evils of Speech at Amakashi, and fixed the family names and clan names of the eighty companies of the realm.
He also established the Karube as the name-bearers of Prince Karu of Kinashi, the Sashibe as the name-bearers of the empress, and the Kahabe as the name-bearers of Tawi no Nakatsuhime, the empress's younger sister.
Emperor Ingyō's Years and Tomb
The emperor's years were seventy-eight. His tomb is at Nagae near Wega in Kafuchi.

Prince Karu and His Sister
After the emperor died, the succession had been settled on Prince Karu of Kinashi. But before he took the throne he lay with his younger sister, Karu no Ōiratsume. Then he sang:
I make a paddy in the mountains;
the mountain is high, so
I run a pipe beneath the ground.
The sister I wooed in hiding, as that pipe runs hidden,
the wife I wept for, weeping under my breath —
tonight at last
I touch her skin at ease.
This is a shirage song. He sang again:
On the bamboo-grass leaves
the hail beats down, tashi, tashi —
once we have surely slept together,
let people part us if they will.
If we have slept, and slept as lovers,
then let it tangle as cut rushes tangle,
let it tangle —
if only we have slept together.
This is a raised rustic song.
The War Between Karu and Anaho
Then the officials and the people of the realm turned away from Prince Karu and gave their hearts to Prince Anaho.
Prince Karu grew afraid and fled into the house of the chief minister Ōmae Omae no Sukune, where he made weapons ready. The arrows made at that time had copper inside the shaft; those arrows are called Karu arrows.
Emperor Ankō (Prince Anaho) also made weapons. The arrows this prince made are the arrows of the present day; they are called Anaho arrows.
Emperor Ankō raised an army and surrounded the house of Ōmae Omae no Sukune. When he reached the gate, a heavy hail-rain fell. So he sang:
Under the shade of the metal gate
of Ōmae Omae no Sukune,
come and gather here like this;
let us wait out the rain.
At that Ōmae Omae no Sukune came out, raising his hands, striking his knees, dancing and singing. His song was:
The little bells on the leg-cords
of the courtiers
have fallen off —
so the courtiers are clamouring.
Villagers, take care.
This song is a courtier's dance-song. Singing thus he came near and said: "Child of my sovereign, do not turn weapons against your elder brother by the same mother. If you turn weapons on him, people will surely laugh. I will seize him and hand him over."
So Emperor Ankō disbanded his troops and withdrew. Ōmae Omae no Sukune seized Prince Karu, led him out, and handed him over. Being seized, the prince sang:
Girl of Karu,
if you weep aloud
people will find us out.
Weep low in your throat,
like the dove of Mount Hasa.
He sang again:
Girl of Karu,
lie close beside me,
sleep, and then go,
girls of Karu.
Prince Karu and Sotoori Die Together
Prince Karu was seized and banished to the hot springs of Iyo. As he was about to be sent away, he sang:
Birds that fly the sky are messengers too.
When you hear the crane call,
ask after my name.
These three songs are in the Amada manner.
He sang again:
If they set the great lord adrift on an island,
there will be ship enough to bring me back.
My mat, take care.
Though I say "mat,"
my wife, take care.
This song is in the lowered Hina manner.
Then Sotoori (Karu no Ōiratsume) offered a song:
On the beach of Ahine of the summer grass,
do not let his feet come down on the oyster shells.
Let him wait for the light and pass.
The consort could not bear her longing, and as she followed after him she sang:
Since you went the days have grown long.
Like the yamatazu I will go out to meet you.
I will wait no longer.
What is called yamatazu here is what is now the miyatsukogi.
When she reached him, he had been waiting for her, and he sang:
On the mountain of Hatsuse of the hidden land,
on the great ridge they raise the banners,
on the small ridge they raise the banners,
great ridge and small ridge alike,
we settled it between us,
my beloved wife, ah.
Lying down as a zelkova bow lies,
standing up as a catalpa bow stands,
I will look after her to the end,
my beloved wife, ah.
He sang again:
On the river of Hatsuse of the hidden land,
in the upper shallows they drive the sacred stake,
in the lower shallows they drive the true stake,
on the sacred stake they hang a mirror,
on the true stake they hang a true jewel.
My sister, whom I think of as a true jewel,
my wife, whom I think of as a mirror,
only if I were told she was there
would I go to my house,
would I long for my land.
These two songs are Reading Songs.
Then the two of them died together by their own hands.
Ankō Kills Prince Ōkusaka
Emperor Ankō (Anaho no Miko) lived in the palace of Anaho at Isonokami and ruled the realm.
The sovereign sent Ne no Omi to Prince Ōkusaka with this word: "I wish your younger sister Wakakusakabe to be given in marriage to Prince Ōhatsuse."
Prince Ōkusaka bowed three times and said, "I thought such a command might come, and so I have kept her indoors. I send her in obedience to the command." But thinking that words alone were not enough, he had Ne no Omi carry, as a betrothal gift for his sister, a jeweled headdress of oshiki.
Ne no Omi stole the headdress and spoke against Prince Ōkusaka, saying, "Prince Ōkusaka did not accept the command. He said, 'Is my own sister to be made the bedding of a man of the same rank as myself?' and he gripped the hilt of his sword in anger."
Hearing this, the sovereign was greatly angered. He killed Prince Ōkusaka, took the prince's chief wife, Nagata no Ōiratsume, and made her his empress.
Prince Mayowa Kills Emperor Ankō
Afterwards the sovereign was resting at midday on the sacred couch, and he said to his empress, "Is there anything on your mind?"
She answered, "I have received your deep favor. What should be on my mind?"
At that time Prince Mayowa, the empress's son by her former husband, was seven years old, and he happened to be playing beneath the floor. The sovereign did not know the child was there, and he said to the empress, "There is something always on my mind. When your son Mayowa comes of age, and learns that I killed the prince his father, he may turn a harmful heart on me."
Mayowa, playing beneath the floor, caught these words. He waited until the sovereign had fallen asleep, took the long sword lying beside him, struck off the sovereign's head, and fled into the house of Tsubura no Ōmi.
The sovereign was fifty-six years old. His tomb is on the hill of Fushimi at Sugawara.
Ōhatsuse Kills His Two Elder Brothers
Prince Ōhatsuse was young at that time. When he heard that the sovereign had been killed, he was filled with grief and anger. He went to his elder brother Prince Kurohiko and said, "Someone has killed the sovereign. What is to be done?"
But Kurohiko showed no alarm and remained at his ease. So Ōhatsuse reviled his brother, saying, "He was the sovereign, and he was your brother. How can you have no thought to rely on, and hear that your brother has been killed without alarm, and stand there vacant?" He seized him by the collar, dragged him out, drew his sword, and struck him dead.
Then he went to his elder brother Prince Shirohiko and told him the same thing. Shirohiko was as unmoved as Kurohiko had been. So he seized him by the collar too, took him along to Oharida in Yamato, dug a pit, and buried him standing upright. When he had been buried as far as the waist, both his eyes burst out and he died.
The Last Stand at Tsubura no Ōmi's House
Prince Ōhatsuse raised troops and surrounded the house of Tsubura no Ōmi. Those inside raised troops as well and fought him off, and the arrows they shot flew like reed-ears scattering.
Ōhatsuse leaned on his spear as a staff, looked inside, and said, "Is the girl I spoke with in this house?"
Hearing this, Tsubura no Ōmi came out himself, took off the arms he wore, bowed eight times, and said, "The girl you asked for before, Karahime, will wait upon you. I offer with her five granary estates. But the reason I do not come out myself is this: from old times down to now it has happened that a retainer hides in the palace of a prince, but it has never yet been heard that a prince hides in the house of a retainer. However hard a low man like me fights, I cannot win. Even so, a prince who relied on me and entered my poor house I will not abandon, though I die."
Having said this, he took up his arms again, went back, and fought. His strength gave out and his arrows were gone. He said to the prince, "My hands are wounded, and our arrows are spent. We can fight no longer. What shall we do?"
The prince answered, "Then there is nothing more to do. Kill me now."
So he ran the prince through with his sword, cut his own throat, and died.
The Hunt at Kayano and Prince Ichinobe
After this, a man named Karabukuro, ancestor of the Sasaki Yama no Kimi of Afumi, said, "On the moor of Kayano at Kutawata in Afumi there are many boars and deer. Their standing legs are like a moor grown with pampas grass, and their standing horns are like withered trees."
So Prince Ōhatsuse took Prince Ichinobe no Oshiha with him and went out to Afumi. They came to the moor, and each built a temporary palace and lodged there.
The next morning, before the sun had risen, Oshiha, with a quiet heart, mounted his horse, came up beside Ōhatsuse's temporary palace, and said to his attendants, "Is he not awake yet? Tell him quickly. The night is over. Let us go out to the hunting ground." Then he rode on ahead.
Ōhatsuse's attendants said, "That prince speaks roughly. Be on your guard. Put armor on your body."
So he put armor on under his clothes, took his bow and arrows, mounted, and rode out. When he had drawn level with the other's horse he loosed an arrow and shot Oshiha down. Then he cut the body up, put the pieces into a horse's feeding trough, and buried them level with the ground.
The Flight of Prince Oke and Prince Woke
Then Prince Oke and Prince Woke, hearing of this, fled away.
When they reached Kariwai in Yamashiro and were eating the food they carried, an old man with a tattooed face came and took their food from them. The two princes said, "We do not grudge you the food. Who are you?"
The old man answered, "I am a swineherd of Yamashiro."
From there they fled across the river Kusuba and came to the land of Harima. They entered the house of a man of that land named Shijimu, hid themselves, and served as grooms and cowherds.
Yūryaku's Palace and Consorts
Emperor Yūryaku (Ōhatsuse no Wakatake) lived in the palace of Asakura at Hatsuse and ruled the realm.
He took as consort Wakakusakabe, the younger sister of Prince Ōkusaka, but they had no children.
He also took as consort Karahime, the daughter of Tsubura no Ōmi, and the children she bore were Shiraka, and after him his younger sister Wakatarashihime.
The Shirakabe and the Coming of the Kure People
Then, as a name-holding group for the heir Shiraka, the Shirakabe was established. The attendants of Hatsusebe were also established, and the attendants of Kawase were also established.
At this time people from Kure came over. These Kure people were settled at Kurehara, and for that reason the place is called Kurehara.
The Roof of the Shiki Chieftain's House
While the empress was at Kusaka, the sovereign went over into Kafuchi by the Tadagoe road at Kusaka. Climbing to the top of the mountain and looking out over the land, he saw a house built with raised roof-billets.
The sovereign asked, "Whose house is that, built with raised roof-billets?"
They answered, "It is the house of the great district chieftain of Shiki."
The sovereign said, "A slave has built his own house in the likeness of the sovereign's hall." And he sent men to burn the house down.
Then the great district chieftain trembled with fear, bowed his head, and said, "Being a slave, I built after the manner of a slave, without understanding, and I built beyond my place. It is a fearful thing." As an offering of apology he presented a white dog, draped with cloth and hung with a bell, and had a kinsman of his named Koshihaki hold its leash and lead it forward.
So the sovereign had the burning stopped.
The Courting Song for Wakakusakabe
Then the sovereign went to the house of Wakakusakabe and had the dog delivered with this word: "This is a strange thing I came by on the road today. I send it as a gift of courtship."
Wakakusakabe sent word back: "It is a fearful thing that you should come with the sun at your back. I will go up to the palace myself and wait upon you."
So as he was going back up to his palace, he stood on the pass of that mountain and sang:
Between the mountain on this side, of Kusakabe,
and the mountain of Heguri of the folded mats,
in the gap of the mountains,
this side and that,
a broad-leaved oak stands flourishing.
At its foot the twining bamboo grows,
at its tip the thick-clustered bamboo grows.
Like the twining bamboo, we have not twined and slept,
like the thick bamboo, we have not slept close.
Afterwards we shall twine and sleep,
my beloved wife, ah.
Then he sent a messenger back carrying this song.
Akaiko Waits Eighty Years
Once the sovereign went out on a journey and came to the river Miwa, where a girl was washing clothes by the bank. Her form was very beautiful. The sovereign asked the girl, "Whose child are you?"
She answered, "My name is Akaiko of the Hiketabe."
The sovereign said, "Do not take a husband. I will send for you." And with that he went back to his palace.
So Akaiko waited for the sovereign's summons, and eighty years went by. Akaiko thought, "While I waited for the summons many years have passed. My body is thin and withered, and there is nothing left to hope for. Yet if I do not show the heart with which I waited, I cannot bear the sorrow." So she had a hundred trays of gifts carried, went to the palace, and presented them.
But the sovereign had entirely forgotten what he had said before, and he asked her, "What old woman are you? Why have you come?"
Akaiko answered, "In such a month of such a year I received your command, and I have waited for the summons until today, eighty years. Now my form is old and worn, and there is nothing left to hope for. Even so, I have come to show the heart with which I waited."
The sovereign was greatly startled, and said, "I had entirely forgotten that matter. But you kept faith and waited for the summons, and let the years of your prime pass for nothing. That is a pitiful thing."
In his heart he wished to marry her, but he shrank from her great age and could not, and he granted her a song:
At the foot of the sacred oak of Mimoro,
at the foot of the oak,
how not to be touched,
maiden of the oak plain.
He sang again:
The young chestnut grove of Hiketa,
while she was young
I should have lain with her.
Now she has grown old.
Then Akaiko's tears soaked through the red-dyed sleeves she wore. In answer to the sovereign's songs she sang:
The jeweled fence they build at Mimoro,
the building done and something left over,
on whom now shall I lean,
I, a servant of the shrine?
She sang again:
The lotus of the inlet at Kusaka bay,
the flowering lotus,
those in the prime of their bodies,
how I envy them.
Then he gave the old woman many gifts and sent her home. These four songs are Quiet Songs.
The Maiden of Yoshino and the Zither
When Emperor Yūryaku went out to Yoshino, there was a girl on the bank of the Yoshino River. She was beautiful to look at. The emperor took her as his wife and returned to the palace.
Later he went out to Yoshino again, and he stopped at the place where he had met the girl. There he set up a great seat and sat on it, and he played the zither and had the girl dance. Because she danced well, he made a song:
To the zither played by the hand
of the god who sits upon the seat,
the woman who dances —
let her be so for ever.
The Dragonfly and the Horsefly
Emperor Yūryaku went out to the moor of Akizu and hunted. While he sat on his seat waiting for game, a horsefly came and fastened on his arm. Then a dragonfly came, seized the horsefly, and flew away with it. So the emperor made a song:
On Womuro peak in fair Yoshino
boar and deer are lying down —
who was it that reported this before the throne?
Our great lord,
waiting for boar and deer,
sat upon his seat,
and on the flesh of the arm
sleeved in white bark-cloth
a horsefly fastened.
That horsefly a dragonfly swiftly seized.
That it might carry a name in this way,
the land of Yamato
is called the Dragonfly Island.
For this reason that moor is named Akizu-nu.
The Boar on Mount Kazuraki
When Emperor Yūryaku climbed Mount Kazuraki, a great boar came out. The emperor shot it with a whistling arrow, and the boar, enraged, came at him roaring. Fearing its roar, the emperor climbed up an alder tree. Then he sang:
The boar our great lord shot at,
the wounded boar —
fearing its roaring
I fled and climbed:
branch of the alder
on Ari hill.
Hitokotonushi of Kazuraki
When Emperor Yūryaku climbed Mount Kazuraki, all his officials wore green-printed robes with red cords. Then there were people climbing the ridge of the mountain opposite. The order of their procession was the same as the emperor's, and their dress was exactly the same.
The emperor asked: "In this land of Yamato there is no king but me. Who is it that goes there in that manner?" The answer that came back was word for word what he had said. The emperor was very angry and set an arrow to his bow, and all his officials set arrows to their bows. Then the people opposite also all set arrows to their bows.
So the emperor asked again: "Then say your name. After that let each of us name himself and loose his arrow." The answer came: "Since I was asked first, I will name myself first. I am the god who sends off evil with one word and good with one word — Hitokotonushi, the great god of Kazuraki."
The emperor was awed, and said: "This is a fearful thing, my great god. I did not understand that you were here in bodily form." He offered his great sword and his bow and arrows, and had his officials strip off the robes they wore, and he bowed and presented them. The great god clapped his hands and accepted the offerings. When the emperor went back, the great god filled the mountain and escorted him as far as the entrance of the Hatsuse mountains. This was when Hitokotonushi first showed himself.
How Metal-Hoe Hill Got Its Name
Emperor Yūryaku went to Kasuga to take as his wife Wodo-hime, daughter of Sazuki, the retainer of Wani. On the road a girl met the procession, and when she saw it she ran and hid behind a hill. So the emperor made a song:
The hill where the girl is hiding —
if I had metal hoes,
five hundred of them,
I would dig it away.
For that reason the hill is named Metal-Hoe Hill.
The Serving Woman of Mihe and the Leaf
Emperor Yūryaku held a great feast under a hundred-branched tsuki tree at Hatsuse. A serving woman from Mihe in the land of Ise lifted the great cup and presented it. A leaf of the tsuki tree fell and floated in the cup. The woman did not notice it and offered the liquor. The emperor saw the leaf floating in the cup, knocked her down, laid his sword against her neck, and was about to cut it. The woman said to him: "Do not kill me. There is something I wish to say." Then she sang:
The palace of Hishiro at Makimuku
is a palace the morning sun shines on,
a palace the evening sun casts its light along,
a palace rooted deep as bamboo roots,
a palace whose roots spread as tree roots spread,
a palace pounded firm upon much earth,
with a cypress gate of split heartwood.
Grown up at the first-fruits house,
the many-branched tsuki tree:
its upper branch covers the sky,
its middle branch covers the east,
its lower branch covers the countryside.
The leaf at the tip of the upper branch
falls and brushes the middle branch;
the leaf at the tip of the middle branch
falls and brushes the lower branch;
the leaf at the tip of the lower branch
falls, drifting like floating oil,
into the jewelled cup
held up by the girl of Mihe in her robe,
and the water sounds koworo koworo.
This is a thing greatly to be feared.
Child of the high-shining sun,
these too are the words of the telling.
Because she offered this song, the emperor pardoned her offence. Then the empress sang:
Here in the high market of Yamato,
on the raised ground of the market,
grown up at the first-fruits house,
the broad-leaved sacred camellia:
broad as its leaves is he,
bright as its blossoms is he.
To the child of the high-shining sun
offer the rich liquor.
These too are the words of the telling.
At once the emperor sang:
The people of the great palace:
like quails they hang their scarves,
like wagtails their tails cross as they go,
like courtyard sparrows they crowd together —
today again they seem steeped in liquor.
People of the palace of the high-shining sun,
these too are the words of the telling.
These three songs are Songs of Heavenly Words. At this feast the emperor praised the serving woman of Mihe and gave her many gifts.
Songs of the Emperor and Wodo-hime
At this feast Wodo-hime of Kasuga presented the liquor. So Emperor Yūryaku sang:
Maiden of the retainers,
you are holding the fine flagon.
Holding the fine flagon,
hold it firmly;
firmly below,
hold it firmer still,
child who holds the fine flagon.
This is a Cup Song. Then Wodo-hime offered a song:
Our great lord
leans and stands at the morning door,
leans and stands at the evening door —
would that I were the board
beneath his armrest.
Ah, brother.
This is a Quiet Song.
The Death and Tomb of Emperor Yūryaku
Emperor Yūryaku's years were one hundred and twenty-four. His tomb is at Takawashi in Tajihi in Kawachi.
The Search for an Heir
Emperor Seinei ruled the realm from the palace of Mikakuri at Ihare. He had no empress and no children. So the Shiraka corporation was established to carry his name.
After he died there was no prince to rule the realm. They sought for a prince who should succeed to the sun-line, and found Oshinumi no Iratsume, also called Ihitoyo, the younger sister of Prince Ichinobe no Oshiha, who was living at the palace of Tsunusashi at Takaki in Oshinumi in Kazuraki.
The Two Princes Found in Harima
Wodate of the Yamabe was appointed governor of Harima. In that land he came to the house-warming of a man named Shizhimu. When the feast was at its height, everyone in turn danced. Two boys who were tending the fire beside the hearth were told to dance. One said, "Elder brother, you dance first," and the other said, "Younger brother, you dance first," and so they gave way to each other. The people gathered there laughed at them for it. At last the elder danced, and then, as the younger was about to dance, he chanted:
The great sword my lord of the Mononobe wears at his side —
its hilt is painted with red earth,
its cord is hung with a red banner.
When the red banner is raised and looked at:
as one cuts the bamboo
of the mountain ridge where it lies hidden
and bends its tips down,
as one tunes an eight-stringed zither —
so ruled the realm
Emperor Richū, whose child was
Prince Ichinobe no Oshiha,
and I am his last descendant.
When Wodate heard this he was startled and fell from his seat, and he drove out the people in the house. He set the two princes on his knees, one on each, and wept. Then he gathered the people, built a temporary palace, lodged them in it, and sent a courier to the capital. Their aunt Ihitoyo heard it with joy and had them come up to the palace.
The Song Contest with Shibi
When the two princes were about to take the rule of the realm, Shibi, the retainer who was ancestor of the Heguri, stood at the song-hedge and took the hand of the beautiful girl whom Emperor Kenzō intended to marry — Ōuo, daughter of one of the headmen of Uda. Emperor Kenzō also stood at the song-hedge. Then Shibi sang:
The far end of the great palace —
its corner leans out of true.
Emperor Kenzō sang:
It is because the master builder was clumsy
that the corner leans out of true.
Shibi sang:
Because the great lord's heart is slack,
into the eightfold brushwood fence
of the retainer's son you have not come.
Emperor Kenzō sang:
When I look where the waves break in the tidal channel,
on the fin of the tunny that comes playing
I see my wife standing.
Shibi sang:
The brushwood fence of the great lord's prince,
bound at eight points and bound all round —
a fence that will be cut,
a fence that will be burnt.
Emperor Kenzō sang:
Fisherman who spears the tunny,
if it slips away from you
you will long for it,
Shibi who spears the tunny.
So they sang against each other until daybreak, and then each went away. The next morning Emperor Ninken and Emperor Kenzō talked together and said: "The people of the court go to court in the morning and gather at Shibi's gate at midday. Shibi will be asleep now, and there are no men at his gate. It will be hard to plan this at any other time." So they raised an army, surrounded Shibi's house, and killed him.
The Brothers Cede the Throne
Then the two princes gave the rule of the realm to each other. Emperor Ninken ceded it to his younger brother Emperor Kenzō, saying: "When we were living in the house of Shizhimu in Harima, if you had not made our names known, we would never have come to rule the realm. This is entirely your doing. So although I am the elder, you shall rule the realm first." He pressed this firmly on him, and so Emperor Kenzō ruled first.
Okime and the Bones of the Father
Emperor Kenzō (Woke no Iwasuwake) lived in the palace of Chikatsu-Asuka and ruled the realm for eight years. He took as consort Naniwa no Miko, daughter of Iwaki no Miko. They had no children.
While this sovereign was searching for the bones of his father, Prince Ichinobe no Oshiha (Ichinobe no Oshiha no Miko), a poor old woman came out from the land of Ōmi and said: "I know well the place where the prince's bones were buried, and they can also be told by his teeth." His teeth had grown unevenly, set like the three forks of a branch.
Men were then sent to dig the ground and look for the bones. The bones were found, and a tomb was raised on the mountain east of the moor of Kaya, and there they were buried, and the children of Karafukuro were made to guard the tomb. Afterwards the bones were carried up to the capital.
Having gone back up to the capital, the sovereign summoned the old woman, praised her for having kept the place in mind without forgetting it, and gave her the name Okime the Old Woman. He brought her into the palace and treated her with generous kindness. He had a house built for her close by the palace and sent for her every day. He hung a bell at the door of the great hall, and whenever he wished to call her he pulled it and made it sound. Then he made a song. The song said:
Over the field of low reeds,
past the little valley,
carrying far,
the bell swings and rings.
Okime must be coming.
Then Okime said: "I have grown very old, and I wish to go back to the country I came from." When he let her go as she had asked, the sovereign saw her off and sang:
Okime, oh Okime,
Okime of Ōmi.
From tomorrow
you will be hidden in the mountains,
and I shall not see you.
The Swineherd Put to Death
The sovereign searched for the old swineherd who had taken his food from him when he first met with trouble and was in flight. The man was sought out and brought up to the capital, beheaded in the bed of the Asuka River, and the knee tendons of all his kin were cut. For this reason, down to the present day, when his descendants come up to Yamato they always limp of themselves.
The old man's dwelling had been well marked and found out; and so that place is called Shimesu.
The Brother and the Tomb of Yūryaku
The sovereign bitterly hated Emperor Yūryaku (Ōhatsuse Wakatake), who had killed his father, and wished to take revenge on his spirit. So when he was about to send men to destroy Yūryaku's tomb, his elder brother, Emperor Ninken (Ōke no Mikoto), said to him: "To break open this tomb you should send no other man. I will go myself and break it open as the sovereign wishes." The sovereign said: "Then go, as you say."
So Ōke went down himself, dug a little at the side of the tomb, came back up to the capital, and reported: "I have already dug it up and broken it." The sovereign, surprised at how quickly he had returned, said: "How did you break it?" He answered: "I dug up a little of the earth at the side of the tomb." The sovereign said: "Because I wished to take revenge on my father's enemy, I had counted on the tomb being wholly destroyed. Why did you dig only a little?"
He answered: "My reason was this. To take revenge on the spirit for the wrong done to our father is indeed right. Yet Ōhatsuse, though he was our father's enemy, stood to us as an uncle, and was also a sovereign who ruled the realm. If we now took only the single fact of his being our father's enemy and wholly destroyed the tomb of a sovereign who ruled the realm, people of later ages would surely revile us. Still, the wrong done to our father must not go unanswered. So I dug a little at the side of the tomb. This much disgrace is enough to show it to later ages."
When he had said this, the sovereign answered: "This too is very right. Let it be as you say.
The Death and Tomb of Kenzō
Then the sovereign died, and Emperor Ninken (Ōke no Mikoto) took up the succession of the sun-line. Kenzō's years were thirty-eight. His tomb is on the mound of Iwatsuki at Kataoka.
Ninken's Consorts and Children
Emperor Ninken (Ōke no Miko) lived in the palace of Hirotaka at Isonokami and ruled the realm.
By Kasuga no Ōiratsume, daughter of Emperor Yūryaku (Ōhatsuse Wakatake), he had these children: Takagi no Iratsume; next Takara no Iratsume; next Kusubi no Iratsume; next Tashiraka no Iratsume; next Ohatsuse no Wakasazaki no Mikoto; next Prince Mawaka.
By his next consort Nukawakago no Iratsume, daughter of Hitsuma no Omi of Wani, he had: Kasuga no Yamada no Iratsume.
The children of this sovereign were seven in all. Of these, Ohatsuse no Wakasazaki no Mikoto ruled the realm.
No Heir, and a King Sent For
Emperor Buretsu (Ohatsuse no Wakasazaki no Mikoto) lived in the palace of Namiki at Hatsuse and ruled the realm for eight years. This sovereign had no children, and so the Ohatsuse Be was established to stand in place of an heir. His tomb is on the mound of Iwatsuki at Kataoka.
When this sovereign died there was no prince to take up the succession. So Emperor Keitai (Ohodo no Mikoto), a descendant in the fifth generation from Emperor Ōjin (Homuda), was brought up from the land of Chikatsu-Ōmi, married to Tashiraka no Mikoto, and given the realm.
Keitai's Children and Iwai of Tsukushi

Emperor Keitai (Ohodo no Mikoto) lived in the palace of Tamaho at Iware and ruled the realm.
By Wakahime, of the line from which the Mio no Kimi descend, he had two children: Ōiratsuko; next Izumo no Iratsume.

By his next consort Abe no Haehime he had three children: Wakaya no Iratsume; next Tsubura no Iratsume; next Prince Azu.
The children of this sovereign numbered nineteen in all, seven princes and twelve princesses. Of these, Amekuni Oshiharuki Hironiwa no Mikoto ruled the realm; next Hirokuni Oshitake Kanahi no Mikoto also ruled the realm; and Sasage served the shrine of Ise.
In this reign Iwai, lord of Tsukushi, did not obey the sovereign's commands and showed much disrespect. So Mononobe no Arakabi (Mononobe no Arakai no Ōmuraji) and Ōtomo no Kanamura (Ōtomo no Kanamura no Muraji), the two of them, were sent to kill Iwai.
This sovereign's years were forty-three. He died on the ninth day of the fourth month in the year of the fire sheep. His tomb is at Ai in Mishima.
Ankan, Who Had No Children
Emperor Ankan (Hirokuni Oshitake Kanahi no Mikoto) lived in the palace of Kanahashi at Magari and ruled the realm. This sovereign had no children. His tomb is at the village of Takaya in Furuichi in Kawachi.
Senka's Children and the Lines They Founded

The children of this sovereign were five in all, three princes and two princesses. Prince Honoho was the ancestor of the Shibita no Kimi. Prince Eha was the ancestor of the Ina no Kimi and of the Tajihi no Kimi.
The Twenty-Five Children of Kinmei
